According to Mrs. Boyd, Zach is a slow boy, meaning he is not very intelligent. It is also possible that his below average intelligence makes him a slacker as Zach was given his polluted oyster project at the last minute. Yet, Zach does seem good-hearted and cordial as he did speak with Frank DeTorre in a friendly manner. In addition, despite being not too bright, Zach does seem to be focused on his education as he did put in good effort with his science project, though without knowing the consequences of one eating polluted oysters and how they contain bacteria.
Zach first appeared at his school's science fair, waiting for someone to check out his science project on polluted oysters. He was approached by Frank DeTorre who expressed interest in his project. Zach explained he replanted the oysters six months ago and how the bacteria in the oysters were washed away by the ocean. When Frank asked if the oysters could be eaten, Zach, despite being unsure if his hypothesis on the oysters being cleansed of bacteria, said that they were safe to be eaten. He then watched Frank eat one of the oysters, causing the man to react in disgust on the oyster's taste, telling the boy to recheck his theory before walking away.

It is unknown if Zach is autistic or has mental disorders of any kind due Mrs. Boyd describing him to be academically slow.
