Apparently there appears to be a lot of confusions between the three of Looney Tunes' bulldog characters Hector the Bulldog (from Friz Freleng's Tweety and Sylvester cartoons), Spike (who paired with Chester in both "Tree for Two" and "Dr. Jerkyl's Hide", no relation to Tom and Jerry's same-named bulldog), and Marc Anthony (who paired with Pussyfoot in the Chuck Jones cartoons) among us Looney Tunes fans; so here's how the confusions happen;

  • Hector (from Friz Freleng's Tweety and Sylvester cartoons) is often easily confused for Spike or a grey recolor of Marc Anthony, due to all three bulldogs sharing similar character designs; all three bulldogs have a similar muscular build, drooping face and thin back legs. And it doesn't help either that Hector is rarely even referred to by his name, and rarely ever makes appearances recently due to being swapped-out for his brown "clone" Marc Anthony.
  • Spike (from Friz Freleng's "Tree For Two" and "Dr. Jerkyl's Hyde) is often easily confused for Hector with a red sweater and brown bowler hat, especially that both bulldogs are created by Friz Freleng, and Spike's design is basically reused directly from Hector but with the clothing added, just like how Chuck Jones' Ralph Wolf's character design is basically reused directly from Wile E. Coyote but with the red nose and white eyes; but however, Friz Freleng intended both Hector and Spike to be completely separate bulldogs.
  • Marc Anthony (who paired with Pussyfoot in the Chuck Jones cartoons) is often easily confused for a brown recolor of Hector the Bulldog, especially given that Marc Anthony himself is even colored grey in both "Cat Feud" and in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", and also doesn't speak like Hector, even having Marc Anthony make more appearances in the more recent Looney Tunes spin-off material than both Hector and Spike, including having Marc Anthony fill in for Hector's roles in the New Looney Tunes episodes "Tweet Team" and "To Be The Flea, You Gotta Be The Flea".

But, to tell you the truth, all three bulldogs are intended to be completely separate characters in the Looney Tunes franchise. Also, if one looks closely at all three bulldogs' character designs, there are some subtle differences in the character designs of both Spike, Hector and Marc Anthony;

  1. In addition to the red sweater and the brown bowler hat, Spike tends to look angry with a perpectual scowl most of the time. In addition, Spike's fur color tends to be consistently grey in all of his appearances, unlike his "twin brother" Hector, or even his "distant cousin" Marc Anthony.
  2. Marc Anthony's ears are darker-colored and the tip of his ears are more rounded compared to that of Hector and Spike, and Marc has a light-colored chest, something which neither both Hector and Spike have, and unlike Spike and Hector, Marc Anthony doesn't have any fangs protruding from his lower jaw, and his teeth are all blunt instead of sharp. In addition, he's a bit more plump in appearance compared to Hector and Spike despite being muscular-build like them.
  3. Hector's character design looks almost identical to that of Spike but minus the clothing, but recently, Hector's fur color has been changed from light grey (like that of Spike) to creamy tan-grey fur in The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries in order to distinguish him from his "twin brother" Spike (Interestingly in both "A Street Cat Named Sylvester" and "Greedy For Tweety", Hector is recolored yellow instead of grey).

P.S. The bulldog which Chester goes with is NOT Hector, but his "twin brother" Spike, which is completely unrelated to that of the bulldog of the same name from Tom and Jerry. Not only that, this Looney Tunes version of Spike is a much more villainous character than that of both Hector or Marc Anthony, since he is an aggressive bulldog who just beats up cats (particularly Sylvester) for no reason, unlike both Hector and Marc Anthony whom are basically on the good/neutral side and beat up cats for justified reasons, like protecting Tweety from getting eaten by Sylvester.

Ironically enough, Hector's role and characterization is much closer to that of Spike Bulldog from Tom and Jerry, except that he doesn't talk.
