The Color Purple (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album for the 2023 film The Color Purple, a musical adaptation of Alice Walker's 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and the 2005 stage production by Marsha Norman. The film, directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, and Quincy Jones, stars Fantasia Barrino as Celie Harris Johnson, a young Black woman who endures poverty, abuse, and oppression in rural Georgia in the early 20th century. The soundtrack album was released on December 15, 2023 by WaterTower Music, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Entertainment.
Background[]
The album features the songs from the film, including new versions of tracks originally written by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray for the 2015 stage musical of the same title, such as "Mysterious Ways", "H--- No!", and "What About Love?". The film's cast members, including Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and Colman Domingo, perform the songs with their vocal styles and interpretations. The album also includes two original songs that were not part of the stage musical: "Keep It Movin'", a catchy and upbeat tune co-written by Halle Bailey, Denisia Andrews, Brittany Coney, and Morten Ristorp and performed by Halle Bailey and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, who play sisters Celie and Nettie; and "Superpower (I)", a powerful and inspirational ballad written and produced by The-Dream and performed by Fantasia Barrino. This musical number serves as the film's end credits song and reflects Celie's journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
An extended version of the soundtrack, titled The Color Purple (Music From and Inspired By), also features numerous songs inspired by the movie by artists such as Alicia Keys, Usher, Mary J. Blige, H.E.R., Megan Thee Stallion, and Jennifer Hudson. These songs, which range from soulful R&B to hip-hop, explore themes such as love, freedom, resilience, and sisterhood. The extended soundtrack is executive produced by Quincy Jones, Scott Sanders, and Larry Jackson, the founder and CEO of Gamma., a music and entertainment company. The soundtrack's lead single, "Lifeline", written and co-produced by Alicia Keys, was released on November 27, 2023, and received positive reviews from critics and fans.
