In the film, Stanley is played by the Canadian actor Jim Carrey. In the cartoon series, he's voiced by Rob Paulsen. In the comic series, he is a minor character and has a much different temperament.

Background[]

Biography[]

Stanley Ipkiss is a everyday bank businessman who is unlucky with everything in his life, but then meets Tina Caryle one day and falls in love with her at first sight of her, which he decides to get into the nightclub called the Coco Bongo to meet her there, but unfortunately his bad luck gets the better of him as he isn't allowed inside the nightclub and gets humiliated in the end. Stanley then finds a mask in the water while down on his luck, which he though was a person down there, but then later on back at his apartment, he notices that the mask glows, so he puts it close to him and becomes a wacky, crazy, good-hearted, polite and kind madman called The Mask who becomes a no name gangster first mostly to bring fear and respect into people who have mistreated Stanley as he puts exhaust pipes into the bottoms of two mechanics who ripped Stanley off early and even robbed the bank Stanley works in, so he can use the money to get inside the Coco Bongo, but like Stanley he falls in love with Tina at first sight as well, which he decides to become a superhero in the end to save Tina and everyone else from Dorian Tryell and his gang in the end.

Personality[]

Stanley is shy, a doormat, meek, kind and good-hearted. He doesn't have a lot of confidence with himself and lets himself be taken advantage of and/or bullied by other people, but after getting the Mask of Loki, he gets a lot more confident from the Mask's influence and tells people off when he needs to. Stanley doesn't get along with his alter-ego at first and on several occasions got rid of the mask of Loki, only having to bring it back when he, his friends and/or the people in Edge City are in trouble, but overtime he does start to trust his alter-ego a lot more after finding out from when they both existed at the same time on how much he cares about him and loves him like a brother to the point he puts it on without hesitation.

The Mask is confident, loud, carefree, go-lucky, childish, polite, bizarre, eccentric, impulsive, wacky, crazy and good-hearted. He is very chaotic and wild as he goes on doing whatever he wants and dancing at the Coco Bongo half of the time, but he does genuinely care about his friends, his unmasked self Stanley and the people in Edge City so he goes after any criminals or supervillains out there who are causing trouble. He has a very short-attention span as he focuses on trivial things instead of going taking care of the problem straightaway, but he does get himself back on track eventually and get back to the task at hand.

Physical Appearance[]

Stanley wears a blue business suit which he works at the bank in, though he does occasionally change to casual clothes when he is not working at the bank. He also wears pyjamas that has spots on it while in his apartment. Stanley has brown eyes, brown hair, normal teeth, ears and a normal nose.

The Mask in his default appearance wears a yellow zoot suit with a black tie with white spots that he later changed to a red tie with black spots, a handkerchief that is red with black spots, a hat with a feather on top of it and snazzy black shoes with white vamps on them, but he changes his clothes to any situations he's in and/or to relax in. The Mask has cartoony eyes, has a bald head, big white block teeth, a small nose and his ears are covered which he enlarges them to hear sounds that are too far away to hear.

Powers and abilities[]

The Mask has all the powers and abilities from the mask of Loki, which makes him a superhuman as he can stretch himself with his limbs and his neck, along with popping his eyes out and changing his head into that of any animals, which reflects his thinking and mood. The Mask is also immune to non cartoon weapons and is immortal as he doesn't age at all, along cannot be harmed by almost any diseases except the common cold which is one of the most harmless diseases, but turns out to be fatal to the mask personas and their wearers. The Mask also has super intelligence as he can think his way out of any situations he's in very quickly and is brilliant with his methods.

Relationships[]

Tina Caryle[]

Stanley falls in love with Tina at first sight when working in the bank and gets distracted by her, that he didn't pay attention to what he was doing as he put a pen in the pencil sharper. The Mask didn't feel that way at first as he decided to get payback on those who bullied Stanley, but like him does end up falling in love with Tina at the nightclub the Coco Bongo after robbing the bank where Stanley works at and dropping his jaw and popping his eyes out at the same time, pumps his heart out of his chest and finally turns his head into that of a cartoon wolf which he uses a hammer to get it back to normal and dances with her and kiss her at the end of it. The Mask even shows what a sweet, kind and charming gentleman he is, despite doing it too strong at first by blowing a heart made out of smoke and putting an arrow through it and saves her life at the Coco Bongo by swallowing a bomb literally inside him which it explodes harmlessly, which though Tina prefers Stanley instead of him, clearly comes to like him because of these things.

Milo[]

Stanley trusts Milo with his life to the point that Milo is one of the few to know that he and the Mask are the same person, which the Mask also feels the same way as well, as he stops doing his usual activities and looks for Milo showing how much he cares about and loves Milo, which anyone hurting Milo is one of the few things that Stanley and the Mask agree on finding anyone who hurt Milo and make them pay for it. Milo got scared of The Mask at first due to his cartoonish, unpredictable, chaotic and wild nature, which he hides under the bed everytime Stanley puts the mask of Loki on, but overtime Milo does start to trust the Mask a lot more as he can see how much the Mask cares about him to the point that he helps the Mask out in any situations that even he can't get out of, along having to wear the mask of Loki on several occasions to help and save Stanley.

Trivia[]

The Mask has similarities to the Joker as they are both joking, over the top and cartoonish madmen with similar clothes, the same smile and both are feared by their enemies, but the Mask is a superhero who genuinely cares about people and is a harmless troll, while the Joker is a supervillain who cares only about himself and takes joy in hurting people.
