"She Be Mine" is a song featured in the 2023 musical film The Color Purple, based on the 2005 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was adapted from the 1982 novel by Alice Walker. The song was written by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray, and performed by Phylicia Pearl Mpasi and the ensemble. It is sung by the character of Celie Harris Johnson, played by Mpasi after she spots her stolen baby daughter in a local store.
Lyrics[]
Celie:
I see my baby girl
Can't be no one else
Lookin' just like me and my daddy
No words when I saw myself
I sees her hand on the lady's shoulder
She come out of me chewin' her fist
She got my eyes
And a face I done kissed
I sews "Olivia" on her didies
Lil' stars and flowers too
I know she sees
Same things I do
Celie and the Chain Gang:
Oh, the Lord done sent me a sign
Oh, I know she be mine
Mm, mm
When I see mamas holdin' babies
I feel pain come across my heart
Celie:
Somethin' deep inside bein' tore apart
It like a spell come on my body
My baby's breath on me
She gon' carry her away
But I still see...
Celie and Washerwomen:
Oh, the Lord done sent me a sign
Oh, I know she be mine
Oh, the Lord done sent me a sign
Oh, I know she be mine
Celie:
Mm, mm, mm, mm
She be mine
She be mine
Mm, mm, mm
Mm, mm, mm
Mm, mm, mm
She be mine
Mm, mm
Mm, mm, mm
Mm, mm, mm
She be mine
She be mine
She be mine
She be mine
She be mine
She be mine
