The Oompa-Loompas are fictional characters from Roald Dahl's books Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. They are a species of dwarfish humanoids who come from Loompaland, and now work for Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka's Factory.

Appearance[]

In the 1971 adaptation, they have orange skin and long green hair. They wear red-brown shirts, white overalls, white gloves, brown and white striped socks and brown shoes with red balls on them.

In the 2005 adaptation, they have brown skin and have black hair usually worn in a ponytail style. They wear protective lab uniforms of different colors red, yellow, and blue, black and white striped socks and black socks. They are shown to wear native clothing when living in Loompaland.

In the 2023 prequel-reboot film, they mostly resemble the appearance of the 1971 Oompa-Loompas, except that they are significantly much shorter and are shown to mostly wear multi-coloured suits with black curved-up slippers.

Live-action productions[]

1971 adaptation[]

The Oompa-Loompas are first seen working in the chocolate room they pour the cream and sugar in the chocolate river. After Augustus Gloop's demise one of the Oompa-Loompas escorted Mrs. Gloop to the fudge room. Then the Oompa-Loompas sing a song about gluttony.

The three Oompa-Loompas are seen in the Wonkatania boat. One of them drives the boat while the two of them paddle the wheel. They are all seen working on the candy in the Inventing room. As Violet Beauregarde becomes a blueberry Willy Wonka asks one of the Oompa-Loompas to roll Violet to the juicing room at once and the Oompa-Loompa nods in agreement. Then the Oompa-Loompas sing a song about unhealthy habits as they roll Violet to the juicing room. One of them escorts Mrs. Beauregarde to the juicing room as he complains that he has a blueberry for a daughter.

The Oompa-Loompas are all seen working on the golden chocolate eggs in the geese room. They all attempt to control Veruca Salt as she sings "I Want It Now!' After Veruca and Mr. Salt go down the garbage chute the Oompa-Loompas all sing a song about being spoiled.

The Oompa-Loompas are seen filling the Wonka Mobile with sodas. Then the Oompa-Loompas are all seen in the Wonkavision room. Four of them bring the Giant Wonka bar so it can be transmitted to the television screen.

After Mike Teavee's demise two of the Oompa-Loompas pulled a dismayed Mrs. Teavee who is about to faint. Then they are last seen singing a song about an obsession with television. They are never seen again afterwards but they are mentioned by Willy Wonka who tells Charlie Bucket to take care of them for him.

2005 adaptation[]

In the 2005 adaptation, most of the Oompa-Loompas (excluding the ones who are either animated or animatronic puppets) are portrayed by Deep Roy (making them all virtually identical) while Danny Elfman and Geoffrey Holder provide their voices. In this version, a lot more of their backstory in Loompaland is shown. They also have their own form of language which Willy Wonka understands, although they sing in English and interact with the audience in English.

2023 adaptation[]

In the 2023 film, the Oompa-Loompas are animated in CGI and portrayed by Hugh Grant through motion capture. They are not shown to have their own language, and mostly communicate in English. The only named Oompa-Loompa in the film is Lofty, who guards their supply of cacao beans. Their subplot in the film is that Willy Wonka stole their cacao beans, and Lofty was sent to pursue him, and thieve him for payback. Lofty and Wonka eventually befriend each other when Lofty saves him and Noodle from being killed by Arthur Slugworth. Wonka rewards him with chocolate and lets him be the first to see his new Factory as it is formed.
