The Witches (1990)[]

After Luke's parents are killed in a car accident, his grandmother, Helga, becomes his legal guardian. Prior to this, she tells him all about witches and the threat they pose to kids. Not long after moving to England, Luke encounters a witch while working on a treehouse; she tries to lure him down with a pet snake, but he is smart enough to stay away from her.

Following Luke's ninth birthday, he and Helga go to the Hotel Excelsior in Bournemouth, where he meets Bruno Jenkins, and encounters a group of witches posing as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, lead by the hideous and frightening leader of the witches, the Grand High Witch, while playing with his mice in the ballroom.

Trapped in the ballroom and unable to escape due to the doors being locked, Luke steathily eavesdrops on the witches' meeting as the Grand High Witch concocts a plan to wipe out all the children in England: using a magic potion "Formula 86" that will turn them into mice in chocolates from sweet shops and candy stores. Bruno is brought into the room, having been given the potion moments before, and transforms into a mouse, though he manages to escape.

Just as the meeting adjourns, one of the witches picks up Luke's scent. Luke narrowly escapes, despite his glasses being crushed by the witches, and hides in a small cranny near the beach. In an attempt to draw him out, the Grand High Witch pushes a carriage with a baby down the hill; Luke manages to save the baby from going over the cliff, then runs back to the room he and Helga are staying in, where he finds her in a diabetes-induced dizzy spell and is captured by the Grand High Witch, who brings him back to the ballroom and makes him drink the potion, turning him into a mouse as well. The witches step on his clothes, attempting to crush him, but he escapes, finds Bruno, and reunites with a recovered Helga, then comes up with a plan to turn the tables on the witches.

He sneaks into the Grand High Witch's room and steals one of the Formula 86 bottles, then goes to the kitchen and puts it in the soup for the RSPCC party, despite one of the Grand High Witch's minions working undercover in the kitchen. At dinner, the formula transforms all the witches except the Grand High Witch's assistant, Miss Susan Irvine, who was not allowed to join the party and quit, into mice. Mr. Stringer, the staff, and guests join in killing the mice. Luke spots the transformed Grand High Witch and points her out to Helga, who traps her under a water jug to keep her from escaping, then leaves Mr. Stringer to kill her with a meat cleaver.

Luke and Helga leave the hotel and return home, where the Grand High Witch's trunk full of money and an address book for all the witches in the United States is delivered. Thus, they concoct a plan to eliminate all the American witches. As they are sleeping, a reformed Miss Irvine comes to their house and turns Luke back into a human; she also gives him back his glasses and pet mice, then departs to return Bruno to his original self as Helga and Luke bid her farewell.
