Miss Lucy Simian is the secondary antagonist of the 2011 animated series The Amazing World of Gumball.

She is Gumball's sadistic teacher, who has been teaching second grade for 300 millennia. She utterly despises Gumball and does whatever she can to foil his plans. Principal Brown is hopelessly in love with her, and she returns the feeling.

Background[]

Appearance[]

Miss Simian is a very old baboon. She has dark grey fur, a homely primate face, with grey hair (and a lighter-colored patch in the shape of a stylized skull). She wears a pale brownish-buff polka-dotted dress. Like most primates, her arms span the length of her body, though she walks solely on her two legs instead of using her arms to help. She is also rather skinny for a primate.

In her season 2 redesign, her dress is pink with no dots and pink outlines, the wrinkles on her lips are gone, and her pelvis is not visible. Also, her face has now a color of pink on her nose, eye bags, and ears, as compared to season 1, in which her face's colors are only black and white. The top part of her hair is now colored white, making it resemble a mountain (such as Mount Fuji, as Gumball puts it in "The Countdown"). She now has white eyes with greenish irises.

Personality and traits[]

Miss Simian is a very grumpy, abusive, obnoxious and cantankerous individual who does not seem to care about her students in the least, especially Gumball and Darwin, whom she hates with a passion. She is a vicious, sadistic, and bad-tempered woman who takes great pleasure in giving out pop quizzes, and outright lying to her student, so that she does not get in trouble. She is also known to bully people much younger than her, as shown in "The Ape". Her nasty and aggressive attitude is somewhat justified by the fact that she is been a teacher for many years (numbered in the thousands), a job that she apparently hates. She seems to make an exception for William, as she takes him in as her personal snitch.

In "The Apology", it is shown that when she becomes particularly enraged, frustrated and argumentative, she reverts to a much more feral personality, and (like a real ape) will screech so loud, and go on a rampage of destruction. In "The Joy", she appears to get happier as long as her students are sad and enjoys proving herself right all the time.

Role in series[]

Early Reel[]

She first appeared in the Early Reel in the schoolyard.

Season 1[]

In "The Responsible", when Nicole and Richard are waiting for the parent-teacher meeting outside of her classroom. Nicole tries to calm Richard down, reassuring that they are adults now and that Miss Simian has no power over them, but their subsequent encounter only rings true to the contrary.

In "The Third", she instructs the students to play "trust ball".

In "The End", she gives a surprise exam and later after Gumball's stupid speech, he punishes them.

In "The Dress", she is one of the people who fall for Gumball's disguise and she blows the whistle.

In "The Painting", she appears as a drawing in a portait maded by Gumball and Darwin.

In "The Ghost", she is mentioned when Darwin puts some of her dandruff in his mixture of gross things.

In "The Mystery", She accuses Gumball of hurting Principal Brown; at the end of the episode, she is revealed to be the perpetrator. Later she erases Bobert's memory to stay innocent, obstructing justice and causing Gumball and the rest to turn on her. As she walks away and taunts the children, Principal Brown opens his office door and pops out. The door hits Miss Simian, sending her flying out the window. The kids peek out the window to see Miss Simian getting run over by the ambulance that was called for Principal Brown. The episode ends with the kids flinching at the latter event.

In "The Party", after Tobias blackmailed her older sister Rachel, she had an evil plan to tell Brown about the party.

In "The Picnic", she outlines the route they will take, specifically stating three times to avoid the Forest of Doom. The camera zooms in to Gumball and Darwin, who were sitting in the back having trouble hearing her. She and the rest of the class leave before he can confirm this with her. Gumball and Darwin are left to travel through the Forest of Doom by themselves. Gumball, being a self-proclaimed survival expert, feels confident.

Meanwhile, at the picnic area, the kids that followed Miss Simian are stuffed, having had three servings of quintuple-decker sandwiches and getting ready for a fourth.

In "The Secret", she appears in Darwin's flashback.

In "The Sock", She accuses Gumball who she thinks is lying about his homework.

In "The Genius", She appears in Gumball's mind.

In "The Mustache", at school, Miss Simian is teaching her students about the effects of puberty. Gumball and Darwin are passing notes. Gumball's depicts him calling his receptionist at work and Darwin's depicts him voting. Miss Simian spots the two passing the notes and claims that they are at least on topic. The lesson carries on, and Miss Simian begins the topic of acne.

During their gym class, Miss Simian announces that they are going to play dodgeball, which Gumball cannot stand. Tina comes over to Gumball and remarks that he is going to get pummeled, which he does, unfortunately. After almost being hit with a bowling ball, Gumball decides that he has had enough, and his arms suddenly begin to grow to massive proportions with the sleeves of his shirt getting ripped off, his body becomes ripped, and his mustache grows back. He throws a dodgeball with terrifying strength, which hits Tina and sends her crashing through the wall. Gumball looks back at Darwin, who had just gone through exactly the same changes. As they both scream in terror, their voices deepen drastically.

Gumball and Darwin lock themselves in the bathroom again (though this time they are in the boys' bathroom), claiming that they have been turned into monsters. Miss Simian is able to coax Gumball and Darwin out of the bathroom, explaining that what they are going through is just a natural part of life. Miss Simian tries ordering them back to class, but Gumball realizes that they do not need to listen to her anymore because they are men.

In "The Club", she is mentioned.

In "The Ape", she is shown to have many awards, except the "Favorite Teacher Award", because nobody likes her. She pretends to make friends with Gumball and the Watterson family and cozies up with them in order to win the award. It was shown that Nicole bears a hatred for Miss Simian because she kept calling her a "loser" all her life. She is soon convinced that Miss Simian has changed, but later finds out that she was faking her friendship. This ensues in a wild car chase which ends in Miss Simian falling off a bridge. Despite being seriously injured, she gets the award, saying it was worth it.

In "The Meddler", she is mentioned again.

In "The Fight", before the fight starts, Miss Simian finds out that Gumball is about to fight Tina. Gumball is relieved, thinking that she will send him to detention, so he won't have to fight. To his dismay, she refuses to do so until she's "finished her coffee break" and leaves him to face her alone.

Season 2[]

In "The Banana", she is seen drinking her coffee when Gumball and Darwin dash by her, making her drop her cup.

In "The Apology", after finding out that her skirt was up, she blamed the boys for thinking it was funny and went out of her way to prove they were bad.

Miss Simian is determined not to apologize, and she conspires to prove that Gumball and Darwin are bad kids. First, Gumball gives her his report card, and Miss Simian takes them to Principal Brown's office on suspicion of forged signature. Richard is called in to sign the suspension card, and to their surprise, his signature exactly matches the one on the report card.

Next, Miss Simian plants a $100 bill at the library for the boys to find, thereby trying to prove they are thieves. Of course, Gumball and Darwin are overjoyed upon the discovery of money. However, they both agree that the $100 bill is corrupting them, so they throw it away.

Later, Gumball and Darwin are having their lunch when they start discussing about a rumored upcoming fight, and who's going to be in said fight. It turns out they are the ones involved in the fight. The classmates egg them on, but ultimately Gumball and Darwin resolve peacefully. Miss Simian, the one who staged the fight, is devastated.

After a brief, one-sided conversation with the skeletal remains of her father at the museum, Miss Simian makes one final attempt. She enters the boys' restroom to spray graffiti in order to frame Gumball and Darwin. It backfires on her, as she has got spray paint all over herself. Principal Brown is fed up with her attempts, and warns to stop or else he will fire her. Truth be told, he's sad that it may mean the end of their relationship if Miss Simian is really this kind of person.

Gumball and Darwin see Miss Simian and Principal Brown's plight, and they plan to commit a bad deed and get themselves caught in order to preserve the faculty staff's relationship. They retrieve the spray paint can from the restroom, when they get caught by Miss Simian. She goes into a bout of primal ape rage, and chases them through the hallway. They manage to delay her by unintentionally slamming a locker door into her face. They proceed outside, where Gumball begins spraying paint onto Principal Brown's car and Darwin unsuccessfully throws rocks at his office's window. They get into an argument about Darwin's poor throwing skills when they are caught by Miss Simian. At last, she realizes she finally can take them to the principal's office, only to be surprised upon learning Gumball's intent. She quickly excuses the boys to clean up the car, and as the boys leave, she whispers an apology to them. As she goes back to cleaning, Principal Brown peeks out of his car, and asks her for an explanation on why his car has been defaced.

In "The Worlds", she is seen in her classroom.

In "The Skull", she demands to know who upset Clayton in the cafeteria.

In "The Bet", after Gumball and Darwin were escaping from Bobert, Gumball gets creeped out by Miss Simian, who is hugging him for warmth and he runs away. This makes Bobert fire lasers again. After that Bobert making her literally chill out in the freezer earlier.

In "The Burden", at first she appears in a photo with Nigel Brown, later when Chris Morris activates the school alarm and runs off, forcing Gumball and Darwin to chase after him. However, the hamster is so slow that they keep running ahead of him, so they adjust by running at the speed of an old 90's computer.

The alarm triggers the Donut Cop, Miss Simian, and Principal Brown to look around the school. Gumball and Darwin avoid them and go to the Lab to search for the hamster. Inside, Chris Morris uses gas and a broken light bulb to cause an explosion. Gumball and Darwin run away from the blast, but they jump for cover too early and are burned anyway. Enraged, Gumball sprints after the the hamster and tackles him. He moves so fast that he ends up flying through the hallway, passing straight through the Donut Cop's mouth while he yawns.

Gumball and Chris Morris eventually end up in the Principal's office. Gumball catches the hamster, but Chris Morris bites his arm and escapes. Gumball's scream of pain alerts Miss Simian, Principal Brown, and the Donut Cop, who head to Principal Brown's office to investigate.

Trivia[]

  • She is the oldest known character in the show who is not a celestial body.
  • The word "simian" comes from the Latin word "sīmia," which translates to "ape" and "monkey." This is accurate since Miss Simian is a baboon.
  • Miss Simian does not visibly age, as she has kept the same appearance since Nicole's childhood. This is due to the fact she is over two million years old, and she taught during the Stone Age.
  • In "The Apology," it is revealed that her first name is Lucy.
    • This is a reference to Lucy, the earliest known hominid to walk upright.
    • In the same episode, it also is revealed that she has taught for over 300,000 years, while in "The Pest," it is revealed she has been alive for over two million years.
  • In season 2, her accent appears to have slightly changed from a British-American accent to an American accent.
    • This is likely because of the change from Lewis MacLeod, a Scottish voice actor, in season 1 to Hugo Harold-Harrison in season 2.
  • It is revealed in "The Fraud" that she lied about her age to become a teacher.
  • Her license plate reads 66666, which is a reference to the Number of the Beast.
  • She likes to give out tests as shown in "The End". She also seems to like pretty dresses, though it may just be the dress' powerful effect of beauty that causes her to like it.
