LONG JOURNEY IN DARKNESS COMES TO AN END, was an article published in the Smallville Torch, written by MacGyver Anderson.

Four years ago, Julia Altman was walking home from an end-of-the-year cheerleading party when she was swiped by a car and thrown into a ditch. The resulting injuries left Julia in a permanent vegetative state, or what doctors often refer to as "a fate worse than death."

As a prisoner in her own body, Julia was unable to eat without the assistance of a feeding tube. Her caring father, SHS's own Coach Altman, stayed by her side every day.

Earlier this month, Julia caught influenza, and doctors advised Altman not to administer any medication. Her condition worsened, and she eventually passed away at the tragically young age of 17.

"I don't know how I am going to be able to go on without my Julia. She was everything to me. We lost her mother right after she was born, and to lose Julia is like I'm alone in the world," commented Altman.

"I miss her every single day," said SHSer Megan Calder. "We cheered together in junior high. What happened to Julia has really changed my perspective on life. It's like, you better seize the day, you know? You never know when it could just all be over."

Funeral services will be held at the Smallville Cemetery on Wednesday.
