James Gordon is a character from the DC Batman comics. He is the police commissioner of the Gotham City police department and ally of the vigilante Batman.

The character debuted in the first panel of Detective Comics #27 (May 1939), Batman's first appearance, making him the first Batman supporting character ever to be introduced. The character was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane as an ally of Batman.
