JAMMING FOR THE FOOD BANK, was an article published in the Smallville Torch, written by Jake Black.
Transcript
Next week, the Talon will host a charity event featuring a performance by the U.K. band Steadman to raise money for the Smallville Food Bank. "This is a great opportunity to help the community," commented the event's co-planner, SHS mom Martha Kent.
The food bank opened shortly after the meteor shower and has been supplying meals and nonperishable food items to Smallville's needy ever since. But with the recent tornado and the unstable state of Smallville's economy, the bank's resources have been tapped to the point of desperation. "We want to help as many people as we can, but we need a lot of help to do it," said Wilford Schlosser, who founded the charity in 1989.
Talon manager Lana Lang credits waitress Donna Higgins, who studied in England last summer, for introducing Smallville to Steadman. "They have a huge underground following in the U.K. I brought a CD of theirs back with me, we played it [at the Talon] one night and everyone was really into them." When Lang heard that Steadman was passing through Kansas on their U.S. tour, she gave them a call, and they were in.
In addition to the performance by Steadman, the event will feature a raffle for a new Gateway computer and other items. Tickets are available now at the Talon for $5 each. A new CD titled "The Talon Mix" will also be released. The mix is a collection of musical acts who have performed in Smallville recently. Steadman's track, "Wave Goodbye," will be included along with an interactive map of Smallville. SHS student Pete Ross is mixing the CD.
