Avery used Egghead in Daffy Duck & Egghead, in 1938. Egghead debuted in the 1937 cartoon Egghead Rides Again. Egghead initially was depicted as having a bulbous nose, funny/eccentric clothing, a voice like Joe Penner, and an egg-shaped head (thus the moniker "Egghead"). Egghead alternated from having a Moe Howard haircut to being bald and wearing a brown derby, a baggy suit, and a high-collared shirt. His voice, laugh, and mannerisms were very much like those of Joe Penner. Many cartoon historians believe that Egghead evolved into Elmer over a period of a couple of years. However, animation historian Michael Barrier asserts, that "Elmer Fudd was not a modified version of his fellow Warner Bros. character Egghead" and that "the two characters were always distinct. Although this was just the unofficial personal conclusion and opinion from an independent historian, that was apparently evidenced by Elmer's early prototype being identified in a Warner publicity sheet for Cinderella Meets Fella (filed with the Library of Congress as a copyright description) as 'Egghead's brother.'" and that "The Egghead-Elmer story is actually a little messy, my sense being that most of the people involved, whether they were making the films or publicizing them, not only had trouble telling the characters apart but had no idea why they should bother trying." However, the character appearing also in the 1939 cartoons in which he was called "Elmer", is today referred to as Egghead, even in the comics and in various collections on 3D figurines released by Warner Bros.. Egghead himself returned decades later in the compilation film Daffy Duck's Quackbusters. More recently, he also made a cameo appearance at the end of Looney Tunes: Back in Action, while going back to being bald again and being redesigned into looking like Elmer Fudd and wearing Elmer Fudd's clothes and derby hat. He has also made appearances in Looney Tunes comic books.
