Opening/Clearwater Marine Aquarium[]

[A shot of waves at a beach are shown as the film's title appears. A young girl named Mandy splashes her feet in the water.]
Mandy: (giggles) It's squishy! There's little fish, Troy! Come see!
Troy: Mandy! Mandy, come back! Mom's gonna be mad!
Mandy hops in the water and then looks up at a piercing whistle. She sees a dolphin thrashing in the water. Troy runs over.
Troy: Mandy!
The dolphin contiues thrashing and Mandy drops her bucket. The scene switches to a truck driving towards the beach. The truck door opens and Sawyer jumps out.
Sawyer: When CMA staff and volunteers arrived on scene. (undistinct shouting) CMA 1307A was found on her left side struggling.
Staff run over to the dolphin.
Sawyer: Her blowhole was largely underwater.
Pheobe: Bring in the stretcher.
Sawyer: She had small lesions, mucus coming out of her eyes, and was severly sunburned. A common problem with beached dolphins, as their skin isn't adapted to prolonged exposure to the sun.
Dolphin tale hits woman.
Sawyer: The team suspected possible lung infection, which led to her being disoriented, which led to her beaching. This dolphin was nicknamed Mandy, after the little girl who discovered her.
Staff member: 92.
Pheobe: That's really, really high.
Sawyer: Now, Science doesn't know whether dolphins feel emotions the way we do, fear, joy, sadness, but their brains are as complex as ours, and to us Mandy seemed terrified. So, like always, we treated her as gently as we treat one of us. We managed to get her into a stretcher and over to the rescue vehicle...
Pheobe: Breath!
Sawyer: Which wasn't easy, as the area was a mud flat.
Pheobe falls.
Kyle: Pheobe, you all right?
Pheobe: Everybody, watch your step.
Sawyer: And Mandy was eight and a half feet long and weighed approximately 350 pounds.
Pheobe: Breath!
They get Mandy intot the back of the truck with the help of Kyle. Scene switchs to at the aquarium. Sawyer, Clay and Reed stand over the pool Mandy resides in.
Sawyer: When we got her back to CMA, we immediately began giving her, fluids and antibiotics for her respiratory infection, as well as a topical ointment for her sunburn.
It's revealed that it was a video and Sawyer was the presenter.
Sawyer: Since then, she's been gaining strength every day, and is well on the road back to being a healthy animal.
People applaud as Sawyer finishes his presentation and he turns off the TV.
Sawyer: All right. Next session, we'll go into more details about strandings. I just want to thank you for volunteering. You guys are what keep this aquarium going. You and really big truckloads of fish. See you Wednesday!
Two girls walk up to Sawyer as he is packing up his stuff.
Susie: Hi. Excuse me? Sorry, we just wanted to say thanks. We volunteered because we heard all about you and Winter.
Girl: All Susie ever talks about is dolphins. She wants to be just like you.
Susie: I do not.
Hazel: Sawyer! We're starting in 10 minutes!
Sawyer: Oh. Right. Excuse me.
Sawyer leaves. Scene switches and shows different aspects of the aquarium.
Hazel: Hi. I'm Hazel Haskett, and welcome to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Fifteen years ago, my mom and dad bought an old sewage treatment plant, and turned it into a hospital for sick and injured marine animals. Their goal was to rescue, rehab and release as many animals as they could. Today Clearwater Marine Aquarium is home to turtles, otters, sharks, and dolphins, including Winter, the famous dolphin with the prosthetic tail. If you're interested in volunteering at CMA, please see our staff at Guest Services. Enjoy your day here at Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
It's busy inside and people start to make noises of surprise while moving out of the way of Rufus. He follows a woman holding his child and grabs her bag. Rufus grabs the girls bear.
Woman: No! Shoo! Go! Hey!
Girl: My bear!
Rebcca: Rufus, No! (runs over to help)
Woman: I'm sorry, honey. Are you okay?
Rebecca: Ma'am, I'm so sorry.
Woman: If you can't control your pelican, you really shouldn't have him here.
Rebecca: He's not exactly our pelican.
Woman: Who's pelican is he then?
Rebecca: You know, I don't think he really belongs to anybody.
Woman: You okay?
Rebecca: Look, I really would like to make it up to you. How about if I take you down to the gift shop? And I'll get you something new. Anything.
Woman: Is that okay, honey?
Scene switches to Hazel standing above a pool.
Hazel: Hi, guys! Welcome to Clearwater Marine Aquarium! How's everybody doing today? (applause) Thank you. We are so excited that you chose to spend your day with us. And today we have a very special guest. Please give a warm welcome to champion surfer, Bethany Hamilton!
Bethany walks over and takes a microphone from Hazel.
Bethany: Thank you, Hazel. I am so stoked to be here. How about everyone out here? You stoked?
Sawyer lures Winter onto the platform with a rubber duck.
Bethany: And being able to spend time with Winter, who has just been, such an inspiration for me, and I'm sure to you as well. Isn't she just amazing?
Winter splashes Sawyer, earning a laugh from the crowd
Bethany: So thank you!
Bethany gives Hazel the microphone and climbs down into the water. She's given the prosthetic tale.
Hazel: Winter usually does three sessions a day with her prosthetic, and as you can see, she really likes it. With it on, she's able to swim normally, and already, it's helped to correct the damage to her spine, and she's able to live a healthy, happy life.
Woman: Do you see her?
Sawyer: Hold it out where she can see it.
Bethany puts the tail in front of Winters eye.
Sawyer: You okay?
Winter splashes Sawyer and the crowd laughs. A man is seen pushing his way through the crown to get a good seat.
Sawyer: Cut it out!
Hazel: Looks like Winter's being extra playful today.
Sawyer: She's being a brat.
Bethany: Maybe it's me?
Sawyer: No, no, she loves people. She's just in a weird mood for some reason.
Winter wiggles and chirps.
Sawyer: She's refusing.
Pheobe: Can you gate Panama? I think she's distracting.
Hazel: That's Panama. She was rescued 12 years ago, unable to catch fish. And we found out why. It's actually because she's deaf, which makes her unable to echolocate. She's also very old for a dolphin. Over 40, we think. (crowd laughs) Heh. I know. It's really old. Heh. But she and Winter are the best of friends. (Panama is seperated) There she goes!
Kyle: Hey, doc. (shakes hands)
Doctor Arroyo: Hey.
Kyle: How are you? So glad you could make it down.
Dr. Arroyo: Glad to be here.
Bethany: Good girl, Winter. Good girl.
Pheobe: Are you ready to take her?
Sawyer: Yup.
Kyle: The two of them are just spectacular.
Dr. Arroyo: Oh, yeah.
Sawyer: You ready? Come on.
Both Sawyer and Bethany are in the water with Winter. Winter swims and does tricks in her prothetic tale earning cheers and applause from the crowd.
Bethany: Attagirl!
Woman: We love you, Bethany!
The scene changes and all the people disapear leaving Pheobe, Sawyer and Winter near the pool.
Sawyer: Phoebe. (he passes her the tail)
Pheobe: Thanks.
Sawyer: Hey. How you doing? (to Winter) You want your mattress? (Sawyer puts mattress on the water) Here you go. All right. You don't want your mattress? (Winter shakes her head) Okay. Gotta go, all right I'll see you tomorrow.
Sawyer leaves but Winter splashes him.
Sawyer: Hey! Winter! What are you doing?
Pheobe: What's wrong with her?
Sawyer: I don't know. She's acting really strange.
Winter goes to the gate that seperates her and Panama.
Pheobe: Panama is too. She didn't eat her 2 p.m. bucket or her 5.
Sawyer: You tell Clay?
Pheobe: Yeah. He had a look at her. He's gonna run some more tests tomorrow.

SEA Semester/Panama's Passing[]

[An aerial shot of the Tampa area is shown; Sawyer bikes through town to his house. Arriving home, he drops his bike and enters the house where his mother, Lorraine, Kyle, and Dr. Arroyo are waiting.]
Sawyer: Hey, Mom.
Lorraine: Hi, hon. I'd like you to meet someone. This is Professor Miguel Arroyo.
Sawyer: Hi. Nice to meet you.
Lorraine: Come have a seat.
Sawyer: Okay. (he sits at the table)
Dr. Arroyo: Sawyer, I watched you today with Winter and everything Kyle tells me seems to
be true. You're really good with dolphins.
Kyle: Dr. Arroyo is my advisor at Boston University. He's helping me get into med school.
Sawyer: Okay.
Dr. Arroyo: I'll get right to the point. We have a special program at the university, for marine biology students. It's called Sea Semester. Twelve weeks on a sailing ship. Full learning experience right on the ocean. This semester we're emphasizing marine mammals. Our students get hands-on teaching from some of the finest scientific minds in the country. Sailing on a tall ship, cruising through the Caribbean and watching wild dolphins in some of the most beautiful waters on Earth. Every year, we invite one gifted high school student to join us and this year we'd like that student to be you. It's a challenge. The science is rigorous, but I think you can handle it. And I promise you it'll be an experience you'll never forget.
Kyle: And it's a full scholarship. All paid for.
Sawyer: What...?
Lorraine: Full academic credit at school. All I have to do is speak to the guidance counselor, and come Fall, if you decide you're in, you'd fly with Kyle to Boston...
Dr. Arroyo: And we'll take care of the rest. To be honest, your work with Winter is very well known in our field. It would be an honor to have you as our student.
Sawyer bikes to the aquarium through some construction and goes in through the staff entrance. He is met with people leaving.
Announcer: The Aquarium is now closed. Please exit the building. We apologize. The aquarium is now closed for the day. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Sawyer runs up the stairs past people up to the nearest staff.
Rebecca: I'm so sorry. There's been an emergency. That's really all I can say.
Sawyer: Rebecca! What's going on?
Rebecca: You've gotta go talk to Clay.
Sawyer runs past her.
Rebecca: Sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for your understanding, everybody. I'm sorry.
Sawyer is looking around in confusion and sees Kat crying. He looks in the pool and gasps as he sees Panama at the bottom.
Sawyer: Panama! (he walks up to Clay) What happened?
Clay: We just don't know. She, took one last breath and went to the bottom. Kat was there, but there
was nothing she could do.
A high pitch whistling sound causes Sawyer to rush over to a different pool.
Sawyer: Winter.
Clay: Winter's fine. We had them separated. We needed Panama alone to do some tests. (divers go inot the pool) She was just so old. Could have been anything.
Sawyer: Yeah.
Sawyer's walking beside the water. He watches Rufus on the dock. He then looks up and spots Hazel in her tower. Sawyer climbs up the ladder to talk.
Sawyer: Hey.
Hazel: Hey. Come in. Or up, or whatever. (Sawyer sits next to her)
Sawyer: Thanks. How you doing?
Hazel: It's funny. I never come up here anymore. I used to spend hours and hours up here. (Rufus grunts) Why do these things have to happen?
Sawyer: Wish I knew.
Hazel: I loved Panama. I'm gonna miss her so much.
Sawyer: She was good, you know? She was gentle.
Hazel: Yeah. If you could turn the clock back to whenever you want, and make everything exactly the way it used to be, would you?
Sawyer: Maybe. But, I don't really know.
Hazel: Yeah.
Sawyer places down a bucket of toys and sits down at the edge of the pool.
Sawyer: Come here, Winter.
Winter doesn't move and Sawyer gives up.
Clay: How's our girl?
Sawyer: Mostly just staying under the platform. (Clay sits) Think she knew Panama was dying?
Clay: It's hard to say. She may have seen something inside Panama that we couldn't. Who knows? Maybe she was trying to tell us. It's really good that you're keeping her company. What's that?
Sawyer: Oh. Yeah, I forgot. (he picks up the bruchure for Sea Semester)
Clay: (he takes the bruchure) Hey, I know this program. It's out of Boston, right?
Sawyer: Yeah. They invited me.
Clay: That's fantastic, buddy! That is a big deal! So when do you go?
Sawyer: September something. But it's for three months. Think it's okay for me to leave Winter that long?
Clay: She'll be fine.
Sawyer: We've gotta pair her up with another female, don't we?
Clay: Yeah. That's true.
Sawyer: We've got Mandy now.
Clay: We do. What do they say? "Whenever one door closes, another one opens."
Sawyer: Yeah.
We're now in a busy building having a serious board meeting.
Man 1: So you're saying basically she's depressed?
Clay: Yeah, in dolphin terms, yes, she's lethargic, not interacting, refusing her food for the most part. We're trying to increase her supplements, but...
Woman 1: What about the prosthetic?
Clay: She's refusing that too.
Woman 1: So it's possible her spine is deteriorating again?
Clay: It's possible. I have an ultrasound and x-ray set scheduled for Friday.
Phillip: It's been, what, three weeks? And you've kept her away from the public the whole time.
Clay: Yup. I have.
Woman: Sounds like she's missing Panama. She's probably lonely.
Man 2: And isn't it against USDA regulations to keep a dolphin in a pool alone?
Woman 1: We have another female. Why don't we just put Mandy in with her?
Clay: I can't give you an answer on that right now.
The other members have left and it's only Phillip and Clay left in the room.
Phillip: But we're more than just a hospital now, man. We're a full-blown aquarium. People are coming from all over the world to see and learn.
Clay: I'm aware of what people...
Phillip: That allows us, to expand and build more care facilities and pools and operating rooms. And how many of those people have come to see Winter? (Clay sighs) Clay, come on. You've seen the faces of the kids and the veterans, right? How moved and inspired they are. Isn't that part of our mission too?
Clay: You can't just throw two dolphins in the water together! It doesn't work that way!
Phillip: I'm not trying to tell you how to do your job, Clay. I'm just saying that putting Mandy and Winter together in the pool, as soon as possible would be a heck of a good idea. Don't you think?

Moody Winter[]

Phoebe: [as Mandy leaps out of the water] Come on up. Good girl. (rubs something on Mandy's back) Yeah. Good girl.
Hazel: How's Mandy doing?
Sawyer: Pretty good.
Pheobe: Her sunburn is looking a lot better.
Hazel: Good.
Rufus flies up to where Hazel and Sawyer are standing.
Hazel: What's with Rufus?
Sawyer: I don't know. He's been doing that for a couple days now, just up and down to that dock over there.
Hazel: Why?
Sawyer: I don't know. Maybe he's losing his mind.
Hazel: Heh. Not that there's much to lose.
Rufus flies off.
Hazel: Which dock is it?
Sawyer and Hazel run down to the dock.
Sawyer: What is that?
Hazel: Is there something under there?
Sawyer and Hazel run down the dock and lie down, leaning over the side to get a better look.
Sawyer: I don't know. What is it?
Hazel: I have no idea.
Sawyer: Oh, my gosh.
Sawyer puts his hands in the water, along with Hazel and Rufus and pulls up a turtle.
Hazel: Here, get its head up! Oh, my gosh. It's all tangled. Rufus!
Rufus falls in the water as he tries to eat the turtle.
Hazel: Rufus.
Hazel, Sawyer and Rebecca carry the turtle with Rufus following.
Hazel: Rufus, cut it out! What is your issue? Go away!
Sawyer, Hazel and Rebecca cut the fishing wire from around the turtle.
Sawyer: Well, least she didn't swallow the hook.
Hazel: Yeah.
Rebecca: When these guys throw their old fishing line in the water, they just don't realize. Ilex, please. The lacerations aren't too bad, I guess.
Hazel: Yeah, but we need x-rays. Make sure nothing's broken.
Sawyer: CT scan?
Hazel: Yeah, and blood work. Check her glucose. She's lost blood, her iron will be low.
Rebecca: Absolutely right.
Rufus is outside the room watching them.
Rebecca: What on earth is wrong with that bird?
Hazel: Where do I start?
Rebecca and another staff put the turtle in a pool.
Rebecca: Thanks.
Hazel: There she goes.
Rebecca: All right. What do you think, guys? What do we name her?
Hazel: Mavis.
Rebecca: Mavis?
Hazel: From The Andy Griffith Show!
Sawyer: Do you watch any TV from this century?
Rufus lands close by.
Hazel: Great. Now he's a bodyguard.
Aerialview of the aquarium.
Anouncement: Please pardon our clutter.
Dr. McCarthy: Excuse me, look out! Look out! Excuse me!
Staff 1: You can't get in without a ticket.
Staff 2: Do you have a ticket?
Dr. McCarthy: No, I don't have a ticket, nor do I intend to buy one.
Staff 1: You need to buy a ticket.
Dr. McCarthy: Stop clawing at me! I've got jars of peanut butter older than you.
Staff 3: But, sir...
Dr. McCarthy: Get your grubby hands off my case, piranha!
Sawyer: Dr. McCarthy! You can let him in. He's our guest.
Staff 2: Sorry, sir.
Sawyer: I'm sorry. There are so many new people here, they didn't know who you were.
Dr. McCarthy: That much is obvious.
Clay and Dr. McCarthy are walking towards Winters pool.
Dr. McCarthy: We have a standing appointment, every 6 months.
Clay: I'm so sorry. It totally slipped my mind.
Dr. McCarthy: Surely she's outgrown the last tail by now.
Clay: The trick has been trying to get her to wear it.
They stop in front of a sign that says that Winters pool is closed.
Staff: I'm so sorry, but no one's allowed back here. Winter's not feeling very well.
Girl 1: Why?
Mom: I'm sorry, girls.
They stand above the pool, where Winter is hiding underneath the platform.
Dr. McCarthy: Does she ever come out?
Clay: Not much. Not since Panama died. It's hard to even coax her out to eat.
Dr. McCarthy: You ever try bacon? It works with my cat.
Sawyer is given the rubber duck ring and leans over the platform towards Winter.
Sawyer: Yep. Thanks. All right. Come on, Winter. Up you go.
Winter swims out.
Clay: Don't rush her now. Nice and slow, Sawyer.
Sawyer: There you go. Good girl. Come on. It's okay. Here she comes. Come on. Good girl. Good girl. Yeah. Come on. Attagirl. Good girl. We gotta get you out of the pool, all right? Gotta make another cast. You keep getting bigger, so we gotta make a new tail. So you can wear it. When you feel better.
Clay: She okay?
Sawyer: I think so.
Clay: Okay, here we go. Ready, Hazel? Phoebe?
The stretcher is brought out over the pool.
Sawyer: Good girl. Good girl.
Clay: It's coming to you, now.
Hazel: Okay.
Clay: Got it?
Hazel: Got it.
Sawyer: It's okay.
Clay: All right, let me know, Sawyer.
Sawyer: Let's go.
Clay: All right, gang. Coming down.
Clay presses the button and the stretcher is lowered. He stops when Winter starts squeaking.
Sawyer: Hey! Easy, easy. It's okay.
Clay: How's she looking?
Clay starts to lower the stretcher again, before stopping it.
Clay: Good?
Sawyer: You're doing good.
Clay: Still good?
The machine starts again.
Sawyer: Come on, it's okay. It's fine. It's okay. You're doing good.
Winter panics and leaps off the platform hitting Sawyer in the face, knocking him into the water.
Hazel: Oh, my gosh, Sawyer!
Winter circles around Sawyer panicking and Sawyer attempts to keep his head above the water.
Clay: Get him out of there!
Hazel: Sawyer!
Clay: Sawyer! Get over here!
Pheobe dives into the water and grabs Sawyer pulling him over to the side.
Pheobe: I've got you.
Clay: Come here!
They pull Sawyer and Pheobe out of the water.
Hazel: Are you okay?
Sawyer: I'm fine.
Clay: Take a deep breath. You're all right.
Sawyer sits in his garage looking at his laptop.his right wrist is in a brace.
Man on screen: In very simple terms, I think our mission here at SEA is to... prepare students to learn on their own.
Lorraine opens the fridge and looks at the SEA Semester pamphlet, then the calender.
Lorraine: Hey, hon. I scooped it for you. I thought that might make it a little easier.
Puts a bowl in front of Sawyer and touches the bruise on his face.
Sawyer: Maybe later. Mom. Stop.
Lorraine: I'm so sorry, honey. Any idea why Winter might have done it?
Sawyer: I don't. She didn't mean to. She just got freaked out. She's a wild animal.
Lorraine: Dr. Clay said anything about when you can go back in?
Sawyer: Nope.
Lorraine: I hate to nag, honey, but Dr. Arroyo needs an answer soon...
Sawyer: Mom, I know, okay? When I have an answer, I'll say so. (Sawyer leaves)
