"Da-Doo" is a song featured in the 1986 musical comedy horror film Little Shop of Horrors with music composed by Alan Menken and lyrics written by Howard Ashman. The song is performed by Rick Moranis as Seymour Krelborn, a nerdy florist who discovers a mysterious plant that feeds on human blood, and a chorus of street urchins named Crystal, Ronette, and Chiffon, played by Tichina Arnold, Michelle Weeks, and Tisha Campbell-Martin respectively. The song introduces the plant, which Seymour names Audrey II after his crush and co-worker Audrey, played by Ellen Greene.
Background[]
The song begins with Seymour walking in the wholesale flower district and passing by an old Chinese man's shop, where he sees a strange and exotic plant that catches his eye. He buys the plant for $1.95 and takes it to his workplace, Mushnik's Skid Row Florists. There, he tries to figure out how to make the plant grow, but nothing seems to work. He accidentally pricks his finger on a rose thorn and discovers that the plant responds to blood. He feeds the plant a few drops of his blood and watches it perk up. The chorus of street urchins narrates the story and comments on Seymour's actions, singing "Da-doo" as a recurring motif.
Lyrics[]
Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette:
Da-doo
Seymour:
I was walkin' in the wholesale flower district that day
Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette:
Shoop, da-doo
Seymour:
And I passed by this place where this old Chinese man
Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette:
Chang, da-doo
Seymour:
He sometimes sells me weird and exotic cuttings
Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette:
Snip, da-doo
Seymour:
'Cause he knows you see that, well, strange plants are my hobby
Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette:
Da-da-da-da-da-da-doo
Seymour:
He didn't have anything unusual there that day
Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette:
Nope, da-doo
Seymour:
So I was just about to, you know, walk on by
Men:
Good for you
Da-doo, doo-da-doo
Good for you
Da-doo, doo-doo
Seymour:
When suddenly, and without warning, there was this...
Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette:
...total eclipse of the sun!
Seymour:
It got very dark. And there was this strange humming sound like something from another world
Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette:
Da-doo
Seymour:
And when the light came back, this weird plant was just sitting there
Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette:
Oopsie, doo
Seymour:
Just, you know, stuck in a-among the zinnias
Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette:
Audrey II
Seymour:
I coulda sworn it hadn't been there before, but the old Chinese man sold it to me anyways. For a dollar ninety-five
Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette:
Sha-la-la, la-la-la
La-la-la-doo
