Constantine (stylized as Cons♰antįne) is an American occult detective drama TV series developed by Daniel Cerone and David S. Goyer, based on the DC Comics/Vertigo character from the Hellblazer series. It aired for one season on NBC from October 24, 2014, to February 13, 2015, consisting of 13 episodes plus one unaired 14th. The show follows John Constantine, a cynical, trench-coated exorcist and con man damned to Hell, who reluctantly battles rising demonic forces threatening humanity—blending supernatural horror, noir wit, and moral ambiguity.
Haunted by a botched exorcism that cost a young girl's soul (the "Newcastle incident"), Constantine has sworn off his demon-hunting life and checked into Ravenscar Asylum. But with dark forces stirring—demons possessing innocents, ancient evils awakening, and a "Rising Darkness" prophecy unfolding—he's pulled back in. Teaming with a rogue angel (Manny), his immortal cabbie friend Chas, and psychic artist Zed, he globe-trots (mostly U.S.-based) to banish threats like voodoo spirits, hellish familiars, and biblical beasts, all while grappling with his guilt and damnation.

Reception[]
The series received mixed reviews from critics., with praise for its atmospheric horror, Matt Ryan's charismatic lead performance, and comic-accurate tone, but criticism for procedural "monster-of-the-week" structure, network-mandated tweaks (e.g., no on-screen smoking, rushed character arcs), and uneven pacing that diluted the serialized "Rising Darkness" plot. Variety called it "spooky" and a solid companion to Grimm, better than the 2005 Keanu Reeves film, but noted the challenge of keeping the formula fresh amid Friday-night escapism. IGN's season finale review highlighted Ryan's excellence but flagged "hellacious hiccups" like underutilized supporting cast (Zed and Manny felt flat) and underdeveloped team dynamics. Cancellation in May 2015 was attributed to high production costs and modest ratings in a tough slot, despite fan campaigns.
