Bubbles is one of the main protagonists of the animated television series The Powerpuff Girls, along with her sisters Blossom and Buttercup. She is the Joy and the Laughter; she is the emotional glue of the superhero trio. She is voiced by Tara Strong.

Background[]

Development[]

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Personality[]

Original series[]

The Ending Theme refers to her as "the joy and laughter", meaning that she is defined as very sweet in personality. Bubbles does, however, have a tendency to be overemotional, despite having a habit to be ditzy, naive and sensitive, leading to her sometimes being regarded as the group's weakest link, by friends and foes alike. However, she can become very independent and aggressive, let alone extremely mad when tempted, as seen in Bubblevicious. Out of all the Powerpuff Girls she is the most feared by Mojo Jojo after having single-handedly taken him down in a fit of rage in the aforementioned episode. At one point, Bubbles gets severely hit on her head and dresses up as Mojo Jojo to fight her sisters.

After the girls were created in The Powerpuff Girls Movie, Professor Utonium named her Bubbles for her cute, bubbly, and joyful attitude (which she revealed by giggling when he named Blossom). Her best friend is Octi, a stuffed octopus given to her by the Professor. Her special ingredient is sugar, and her signature color is light blue. In an interview from The Powerpuff Girls Movie, she was also told that she was not afraid to show her emotions.

The Powerpuff Girls Z[]

Bubbles (PPGZ appearance)

Miyako (Rolling Bubbles) is as ditzy as the original Bubbles. She does not seem to understand her powers completely, along with a few other things. She is, however, the most mature Powerpuff Girl Z on the team and will try to calm any situation, although she too can be angered when provoked. She is also very polite and always uses honorifics at the end of names. She is concerned with shopping, her appearance, and her outfits, and perhaps because of this, she seems to be very popular among her male classmates. While she seems oblivious to the many boys that are in love with her, she's already in love with Cody/Takaaki (or Cody-chan/Taka-chan as she calls him), a boy whom she'd fallen in love with ever since she laid eyes on him, which was when she was six years old. Miyako remains typified.

As well as her love for animals and her favorite stuffed octopus, Octi. In episode 34, it is revealed she lives with her grandmother. Her parents live in Milano. The reason for this is yet left unexplained. She wants to be a fashion designer when she grows up.

2016 TV series reboot[]

Like the other girls, not much has changed in her personality. Unlike her original counterpart, Bubbles doesn't cry as much and is shown to be less sensitive and more mature. She is shown to be a ditz. She is also shown to be bright and naïve like her original counterpart. However, she is also shown to be more aggressive than her original counterpart. (Examples: The Stayover, Horn, Sweet Horn, Strong Armed, and the short Run Blossom Run.) But she is mostly the same as her original counterpart.

Physical Appearance[]

Original series[]

Bubbles is a slender, fair-skinned girl with blonde hair in two pigtails in a neat, curved fashion with blue hair ties and light blue eyes. Her dresses are light blue with a black stripe in the middle, and she wears white tights and black Mary Jane shoes. During the first short, after Fuzzy Lumpkins hits her with a meat gun, her right pigtail becomes a chicken leg.

Outfits[]

The Powerpuff Girls Z[]

She retains her hairstyle during the re-imagining, but her pigtails are slightly longer and curled into ringlets. She also uses curlers (3 balls on each pigtail) when going to bed. In her alter ego as 'Rolling Bubbles', a blue hairpin was attached to her hair.

Her primary appearance is similar to a uniform worn by middle schoolgirls; a white long sleeved button shirt with a blue necktie at the collar, a light blue and black pleated skirt with white frills at the edge, white knee-high socks, and black Mary Jane flats. In the middle episodes, she wears a pink winter denim blazer with a fur collar, underneath is a blue sleeveless dress with frill at the edge of her dress skirt, black socks, and yellow-green cowboy boots. In both outfits, she keeps the white belt with a blue round buckle where she can transform into Rolling Bubbles.

As Rolling Bubbles, her outfit is in a lighter shades of blue wearing a light blue jersey vest with the sign of P at the left side with sky blue and white linings and has sky blue sleeves in each side of her vest, underneath is a sky blue one-piece suit with black linings and matching straps, sky blue short skirt with a white side belt in a blue round buckle to cover her bottoms and black linings at the edge of her skirt and sky blue and white shoes. She also wears black fingerless gloves with white and blue linings.

2016 TV series reboot[]

Her appearance differs slightly from her original counterpart, as she has bigger hair bunches and visible blue hair ties in her hair.

Also, her hair bunches sit higher up on her head than they originally sat. They are also more curvy at the ends. When her hair isn't pulled up in bunches, she has blonde shoulder-length hair. Like her original counterpart, she wears a blue dress with a black horizontal stripe at her waist, white tights, and black Mary Janes.

In the episode Trouble Clef when Bubbles appears alongside Blossom and Buttercup performing at Morbucks' concert, her hair is tied up in a high ponytail with a mint green hair tie. She wears a pink ballet dress, white tights, and purple shoes with green warmers on them.

In the episodes Man Up 2: Still Man-ing and Summer Bummer, Bubbles is shown to have two different swimsuits. In the episode Summer Bummer, she is shown in a turquoise tankini with yellow polka dots on it. For the episode Man Up 2: Still Man-ing, she is shown in a baby blue tankini with pink outlines on it.

In the Christmas episode The Gift, Bubbles is shown in a dark blue version of Santa's red suit along with a black belt and red pants. Her hair ties are a lighter shade of blue and she wears a blue party hat and black shoes.

Powers and abilities[]

She can scream loud enough to shatter glass or buildings and stun opponents. Bubbles can speak multiple languages.

In the episode "Ice Sore", Professor Utonium states that Bubbles' special ability is the ability to speak Spanish. However, as the series progresses, Bubbles' linguistic capabilities appear to grow. In the episode "Super Zeroes," Bubbles is shown to read and speak Japanese. In the episodes "Fuzzy Logic" and "Stray Bullet," Bubbles is shown to speak Squirrel. Bubbles seems to have developed a complete understanding and speaking of animal languages.

In the episode "Reeking Havoc", Bubbles smelt the Professor's chili for the Chili Contest, and she named the ingredients one by one without knowing them.

In the episode "Los Dos Mojos", Bubbles is seen unleashing a big fury of red lightning all around her, causing a lot of havoc. This ability is never seen again. Bubbles may not be aware of her full capabilities as she used this one in a confused state of mind.

Other signature abilities include Vaporiza, Electricity Ball (colored light blue), Electric Blast, and Blue Laser Beams.

Trivia[]

  • Ironically, Bubbles is feared the most out of the three girls by Mojo Jojo, the Powerpuff Girls' archenemy, because he has traumas from when she brutally beat him in "Bubblevicious", which is shown several times.
  • Bubbles is the more humble, kindest and sweetest girl in the Powerpuff Girls.
  • Bubbles had a love issue with Boomer when they met in "The City of Clipsville". It is unknown if she still have feelings for Boomer. However, in the episode, "The Boys are Back in Town" she mentions at one point that she thinks he's cute.
  • In "Beauty, Brains and Brawn", she is described to be the Beauty.
  • Bubbles is one of the nine main characters of the IDW comic Super Secret Crisis War!.
  • She is the only Powerpuff Girl who is not named after a flower.
  • Octi has been Bubbles' best friend since he was given to her by the Professor.
  • Bubbles emphasizes her 'l's a little differently later on in the series, her 'l's sound a little sharper and less curved like an American accent. It's quite noticeable when she says "Blossom". This gives her kind of a more childish feel to her voice and accent.
  • Bubbles makes a cameo appearance in Chowder in an episode "The Heist", making her the second "Powerpuff Girls" character to appear in Chowder (the first being Ms. Bellum in the episode "The Hot Date"). She appeared because Mung Daal ate a sugar sapphire. Tara Strong also voices Truffles.
  • Bubbles was voted the favorite in the Powerpuff Popularity Contest.
  • In "Pet Feud", Bubbles is the only one who doesn't play with BEEBO before feeding it.
  • Bubbles has a slight resemblance to Dee Dee from Dexter's Laboratory.
  • Bubbles has an "X" mark on the back of her head.
  • She cries the most out of all three of the girls.
  • In "Power Up Puff", she claimed that she has an allergic reaction to meatloaf.
  • She was the first of the girls to be seen naked with Blossom shown in "Down n' Dirty".
  • In the English version, Bubbles can speak Spanish as a second language. In the Latin Spanish version, her second language is English.
  • It is mentioned in the episode "Collect Her" that Bubbles is a vegetarian. However, in many episodes, she is shown to eat meat, such as "Child Fearing" where she was shown eating shrimp. It's possible that she changed her diet. Coincidentally, her voice actress, Tara Strong, is vegan.
  • In her interview for the movie, she denies ever crying and claims that sometimes she gets something in her eye.
  • Bubbles doesn't appear to have visible blue hair bands for her pigtails. However, her 2016 counterpart has visible blue hair bands with her pigtails raised in the rebooted TV series.
  • Her hair pigtails can express her emotions. They droop when she's saddened and/or nervous, and they flick straight upwards when she's startled.
  • She is the only Powerpuff Girl Z who, like each villain, ends each sentence with a phrase; hers is 'desu wa'.
  • Miyako is slightly more clueless in PPGZ than her original American counterpart. This was shown in episode 34, when she was oblivious to the supernatural phenomenon in her house, compared to Momoko and Kaoru who were frightened off.
  • Like Momoko Akatsutsumi, Miyako also has a real-life place for her last name. Gotokuji is located in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan; which is also the same location associated with Momoko's last name.
  • Bubbles' appearance in FusionFall is very similar to Miyako.
  • Bubbles' voice is less squeaky compared to her original counterpart.
  • Bubbles seems slightly more mature at times than her original version.
  • Bubbles has a trait for controlling/programming computers, unlike her original counterpart.
  • When Bubbles' blue-energy projection glows, there are little circles/ovals that can be seen floating around the outline for it. In reality, the circle is a symbol of joyfulness, being caring, and peacefulness.
  • Originally, Bubbles’ hair ties were differently designed as shown in the storyboard for the pilot episode "Escape from Monster Island".
  • In "Mini Golf Madness", it was revealed that she farts in her sleep.
  • In "Toy Ploy", it is revealed that she suffers from claustrophobia.
  • In the Cartoon Network 25th Anniversary, it is revealed that her trail is solid and anyone can stand and dance on it, such as Beast Boy and Jake.
