Barbie (Score from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the score album for the 2023 film Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig. The album was released by WaterTower Music on August 4, 2023 and serves as a companion to Barbie: The Album.
Background[]
Initially, Alexandre Desplat was set to compose the music in September 2022, but he was later replaced by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt. Ronson and Wyatt, who also executive produced the soundtrack and contributed to the original songs, took over the scoring duties in March 2023. WaterTower Music released the score digitally on August 4, 2023, with CD and vinyl formats available subsequently. The soundtrack received critical acclaim, earning nominations for several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for Visual Media.
In terms of development, this was Ronson's first time composing an entire film score. He had previously only produced music for specific sequences. Ronson was given the script in March 2022. After being inspired by the character of Ken, he co-wrote and co-produced the song "I'm Just Ken" with Wyatt.
