Allegro is a recurring villain from the 2016 reboot of the Cartoon Network original series The Powerpuff Girls. He appears in three episodes, in which he brainwashes innocent people into acting childish, unreasonable and reckless, causing chaos and vandalism in the process. He first appeared in "Painbow", re-occurred in "Somewhere Over the Swingset" and was ultimately defeated in "Largo". His exact origins are unknown until it is revealed in the episode "Largo" that he is one half of a split persona named Cosmic Bear, while his other half (his alter ego) is a grumpy grizzly bear known as Largo.

Background[]

Personality[]

Although not pure evil because he can, Allegro's personality is quite troublesome: He does nothing but throwing loud and messy parties around the clock while affecting bystanders. He proofs selfishness by forcefully dragging innocent citizens into his questionable behaviour, making them also behave childish and unreasonable. All he cares about is having fun and being as obnoxious as possible. It is his recklessness that gives him villain status, since he willfully ignores any attempt to slow him down and/or talk sense into him. He also does pretty much everything to get his will and want, such as brainwashing Professor Utonium and Ms. Keane and turn them against the Powerpuff Girls. Allegro also proves cleverness by trapping the girls in an alternate version of Townsville, where everyone and everything is (seemingly) perfect. It is thanks to quick thinking and knowing the true I of their beloved ones that makes the girls look through Allegro's sharade and saves the girls from harm.

Physical appearance[]

Allegro is a roundish, tubby panda bear with typical black-and-white patterns. His whole body is remarkably egg-shaped without any discernable neck. He has bright blue, bright yellow, and scarlet colored eyes that form a hypnotizing pattern. Since his circular, large eyes pretty much never blink, they look like being frozen in an ever-crazy glare. His ears are heart-shaped with magenta-red insides, the pads of his paws and feet are neon pink. Allegro's nose is tiny and black and he sports a broad, shiny grin (for most of the time, that is). His voice is high pitched and dragging and can thus be quite irritating to annoying.

Powers and abilities[]

Allegro can hypnotize peoples either with his eyes or with his rainbow. After that, he can easily mind-control them and use them as his pawns. He can also shapeshift to fool victims and bystanders alike. Last not least he can warp reality to a certain extent. Luckily however, this power seems to be limited in the human world, in his dream world, Allegro's powers are sheer limitless. Furtherly he can levitate and even teleport at will and want.

Weaknesses[]

Allegro's body is very fragile and can be broken like an egg if sufficiently hit with force, revealing a smaller, glowing bear that apparently cannot function on its own. He hates his parties being wrecked, mostly by the Powerpuff Girls, but most of all, by his polar opposite counterpart, Largo. This is because Allegro draws his powers from human's overly positive emotions (such as euphory, joy and happiness). If these fade or change into something negative, Allegro loses his power source again. Understandably, this annoys Allegro, making him show his darker, unpleasant side.

Biography[]

In the infamous episode "Painbow", a rainbow formed above The City of Townsville, which managed to have some kind of weird effect on the citizens of Townsville, causing them all to act childish and silly. The Powerpuff Girls investigated the source of the problems, which seemed to be coming from a big, irritating panda bear in the clouds, named Allegro. Allegro was quick to admit that he was the one behind everything, and that he was causing everybody to act childish and reckless, so that they all could have "one huge party". He then proudly announced his plan to turn the whole world into one, big and obnoxious discotheque. He brainwashed Blossom and Bubbles into a state of ignorant bliss, leaving Buttercup as the only normal person in town. Buttercup learned that there's a time and place for having fun, but enjoyment is not intended to be had all the time. Allegro, bummed by Buttercup's conclusion, tried to hug Buttercup against her will, but Buttercup fought back. Every attack Buttercup landed on Allegro, caused him to break into pieces. After finishing him off, Allegro shattered and imploded, the aura of ecstatic happiness around him imploded with him, setting things back to normal.

Allegro returned in "Somewhere Over the Swingset", in disguise as a clown. Allegro had a giant swing set, that stretched over the clouds. He had kids go on there, and try to stay on the swing, but nobody could do it. This was all until The Powerpuff Girls rode on it, despite The Professor telling them not to. The Powerpuff Girls rode the swing, which sent them via teleportation into a parallel universe, where everything was happy and perfect. The Powerpuff Girls knew something was up, and looked around for clues. They found the real Professor, crying in a mirror, which served as a window to their own dimension. The Professor was crying because the girls had disappeared and The Powerpuff Girls decided to go back to their own dimension asap. However, none of the happy people of Allegro's dimension would let them. Allegro emerged from the clouds and revealed that he was behind everything. He joyfully sent his army of happy people to attack The Powerpuff Girls, but they fought them off, and beat Allegro senseless, causing him to explode and implode once more. The Powerpuff Girls used the swingset to go back to their own dimension again.

Allegro's last stand was in "Largo", where a completely different bear named Largo appeared. Largo was the total opposite to Allegro: While Allegro used his rainbows to make everyone happy, Largo used his rain clouds to make everybody sad. Bubbles was concerned by the sudden wave of depression that hit Townsville and she went to the clouds to investigate. There, she met Largo, who introduced himself and told the backstory of how he used to be a normal and well-balanced bear named Cosmic Bear. As Cosmic Bear, he was struck by lightning from a cosmic storm, separating him into two entities of completely opposite emotions. Allegro embodied all of his positivity, while Largo embodied all his negativity. Allegro and Largo simply could not get along, as they were way too different to live together. Bubbles set up a tea party with the two of them, in hopes that it would help them get along. But after she left, everybody just started fighting. Bubbles, finally having enough of everyone arguing, forces Blossom, Buttercup, Largo, and Allegro to make up. After Largo and Allegro hug each other, they form back into Cosmic Bear, who thanks Bubbles for getting himself back together.

Trivia[]

  • Allegro's name is a pun to a certain music term: allegro, which is Italian and means "cheerful" or "happy". It is used to describe a fast rhythm accompanied by happy tunes.
  • Allegro is shown in the music video of Who's Got the Power?, although the girls don't fight him, they all just give him a hug.
  • His high pitched voice and demon-like powers are similar to HIM.
  • He bears (no pun intended) a resemblance to Panda from We Bare Bears, another Cartoon Network show.
  • The debut episode Painbow was and still is harshly critizised for depicting Allegro, Bubbles and Blossom twerking.
  • Besaid episode is also critizised for showing Allegro constantly trying to force a hug on the girls, which are minors.
  • Last not least the episode is also generally critizised by parents who see parallels between the effect of Allegro's rainbow towards humans and the effect of the drug LSD, because they both cause the same symptoms.
  • As shown in his last appearance in episode "Largo," Allegro is revealed to have some similarities to Uni-Kitty from the Lego Movie series and her own Cartoon Network spin-off, such as being party lovers, but also has angry forms.
  • Eric Bauza voiced all three versions of Allegro, Largo and Cosmic Bear.
