Adrian is first seen participating in a balloon-popping game, along with several other kids, including a little girl named Victoria. Successfully popping a red balloon, he graciously gives his prize to Victoria.
His boyfriend, Don Hagarty, gives him a beaver cap that says "I Heart Derry" as a consolation prize. As they leave the annual Derry carnival, they are confronted by John "Webby" Garton and his friends, Steven Dubay and Chris Unwin, who treat them with disdain for being homosexuals. Adrian is about to pick a fight with them, but Don stops him.
Walking along a bridge, the two talk about plans to leave Derry, and go somewhere nicer like New York. Webby and his buddies confront them again, and make Adrian take his hat off. After calling them "ladies", Webby, angered by Adrian's insult, beats him up while preventing him from taking his asthma meds. Don attempts to intervene, but he too, is brutally beaten. Webby and Steven then pick up Adrian and proceed to throw him off the bridge into the river below, forcing a reluctant Chris to put his hat over his head.
Desperately trying to swim to shore, Adrian calls for help, when suddenly, the shadowy shape of Pennywise appears before him and extends his hand to seemingly help him ashore. Don runs down to the riverbank on the other side of the bridge, then glimpses Adrian in It's grasp on the opposite side and watches in horror as the demon takes a big bite out of Adrian's side, presumably eating his heart.
