Movie - Superman (2025)
Release Date - July 11, 2025 (United States)
Writer/Director - James Gunn
Well, looks like it's the begin of DC's New era, ever since James Gunn has took over in charge of DC. Well, yes, the moment has finally arrived: perhaps one of the most anticipated films of this year for me personally has finally been released and is showing strong results. James Gunn's "Superman" certainly has every chance of becoming the highest-grossing film about the superhero in the blue tights and red cape. James Gunn himself directed and wrote this, and I got to see it. I'm pretty tired of comic books, and I don't really look forward to them or watch them, but I couldn't miss the new "Superman" because it was directed by James Gunn, known for his "Guardians of the Galaxy" films. Yes, James Gunn wrote and directed all of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films himself, and then he left Marvel to work at DC. Even though his first attempt was a flop, and his "Suicide Squad 2" was controversial, everyone was eagerly awaiting the premiere of "Superman"! It's probably going to be shown illegally in theaters, because a recording from a Many are already criticizing "Superman" for being too similar to Marvel comics. I wouldn't say so. He doesn't look like Marvel, he looks like all of James Gunn's films - bright, colorful, entertaining, dynamic, comedic, clownish, family, musical... So, no need to blah blah blah.) When Warner Bros Discovery and DC invited him to work for them, they definitely should have known the director's style. He's like Steven Spielberg, who turns any blockbuster into a dizzying ride. That's exactly what the new version of "Superman" turned out to be. And that's great! A comic book should entertain, not put you to sleep with chatter, like DC's "Thunderbolts.") It's funny, but the film opens right away with some kind of epic fight, as if it were the end or the beginning of some second episode, and for some reason we haven't seen the first one.)) Superman is lying in the snow, bloody and battered. The uncontrollable but sweet dog Krypto drags the Master to safety - an Arctic fortress in the form of a fallen alien ship. It's immediately clear that the new superhero can be beaten or even broken. A rogue who is as vulnerable as people. In these first shots, James Gunn sets a new tone for an old story full of humanity, canineness, and politics.) And there's nothing funny about it, since there's some kind of conflict where a stronger country attacks its weaker neighbor. Although the leader himself is afraid of everything and loves bunkers. Remember, When Mr Gunn was accused of many sins and provocations, but the director seems to have apologized long ago and been forgiven for everything. But now comes the very funny "Superman," although the director denies it and says the film is about a simple immigrant who came to the United States from a distant land. Everyone knows Superman is Clark Kent: adopted by a Kansas farming family, raised with love and the knowledge that no matter how much he gives, Superman will always be considered "other." And here, James Gunn draws on the immigrant allegory, touching on real-life issues like US border policy and the scapegoating of vulnerable people. It's no coincidence that Superman is often referred to as an "alien" in the film, to belittle him and portray him as a threat to society. Then all that's left is to come up with a cool villain, and Mr Gunn succeeds again, because he perfectly connects the villain to modern realities. The antagonist, played by the bald Nicholas Hoult, is a hybrid genius-tech mogul who exploits politics for his own gain and skillfully manipulates ideology through digital technology. We are shown the speed with which people's faith crumbles when a friend becomes an enemy. It's a reflection of our times: how quickly those in power can manipulate people and the truth, how easily hatred can be turned against those who look, speak, or live differently. But if you put all my conclusions aside, "Superman" is a truly vibrant, entertaining comic book, full of fun, fights, and special effects! Yes, it's politically sharp, but it always quickly gives way to light humor. The dog is even funny, like Raccoon from "Guardians of the Galaxy." And Green Lantern's hair is something else! Look at that fringe and you'll fall over laughing. In short, everything flies, everything explodes, everything is during the day, everything looks very impressive and cool! Verdict: 9 out of 10. The two hours of the film fly by. The fast pace leaves no dull moment! Instead, it's Gunn's signature energy, which we've seen throughout the entire "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise. It's this constant energy, drive, and fun that helps soften the world's political overload. The emotional arc, Superman's fight for good in a cynical world, remains powerful and clear. In an era of growing discord between countries, endless wars, and government cynicism, this film inspires faith. It possesses kindness and courage. It's touching when a director instills hope in people. Comic books and superheroes have become stale, but James Gunn's films always stand apart from the incubator work, so don't attribute "Superman" to DC Comics. That's not true. The new "Superman" is James Gunn's personal brainchild, like "Guardians of the Galaxy," or Nolan's "Batman," or Waititi's "Thor." For me personally, even before Fantastic Four came out, this was the best comic book movie of the year. It's bright, dynamic, the characters are interesting, the acting is top-notch, the soundtrack is also stunning, and the action is driving. The main theme from the classic Superman film starring Christopher Reeve is frequently used throughout the film. Some might say this is a nostalgia grab, but to me, it's a tribute to the classics and nothing more. That's why James Gunn chose characters from the DC Superman comics we know for this film. "Nostalgia grab" is when you try to cram as many different characters from older films into a film as possible (a common pitfall of films based on the concept of the multiverse), and the films themselves become empty, one-time viewing experiences, from which, if you remove the fan service, nothing remains. "Superman" is not about that at all, and I'm glad James Gunn isn't looking back at Marvel or trying to copy it, but is forging his own path. and I was still satisfied after watching this masterpiece and didn’t even regret it. I must say that James Gunn did what was necessary to make the right choice, namely to put DC back on its feet, and finally bury the old universe and start everything from the very beginning, from scratch, and from a clean slate, a new DC universe. And here James Gunn is at the helm of DC. And a new universe begins. And what awaits us next in the James Gunn's DC Universe. That's a whole different story for now.
Final Verdict - 9/10

Tim Daly is really great as Superman. He makes him sound warm, calm, friendly, compassionate, and down-to-earth. He could also make him sound like a stoic, serious, and no-nonsense leader. Tim really should be the main voice for Superman, and become to him what Kevin Conroy was to Batman.
DC Studios' "Superman" is dropping on HBO Max for streaming sooner than you might have expected.
The superhero's namesake film, written and directed by James Gunn, introduces a new Man of Steel in David Corenswet and launches a rebooted DC movie universe.
In the film, Clark Kent (Corenswet) is in his third year of being Superman and protecting Metropolis when he loses his first fight. The movie also begins after Superman ignites an international incident by stopping a war from breaking out between the fictional neighboring nations of Boravia and Jarhanpur.
"When Superman is drawn into conflicts both abroad and at home, his actions to protect humankind are questioned, and his vulnerability allows tech billionaire and master deceiver Lex Luthor to leverage the opportunity to get Superman out of the way for good," the film's synopsis says.
USA TODAY's Brian Truitt gave the film ★★★½ out of four, writing "the poppy, satisfying adventure succeeds on both fronts with the best Supes since Christopher Reeve."
"The movie features pervasive positivity, one really cool canine and a bright comic book aesthetic," Truitt wrote in his review. "And while this fresh superhero landscape is extremely busy and a little bit familiar, it also feels lived-in and electric."

Tim Daly hasn’t voiced Superman since Justice League: Doom in 2012, and that’s very depressing. It would be really great if he voiced Superman again very soon, because his voice sounds richer now, so it might sound cooler.

I heard Roger Rose, David V. Kaye, Mark Valley, Troy Baker, Sam Daly, Keith Ferguson, and Crispin Freeman voice Superman, and they were all great. It would be really great if they all got another chance at voicing him, because then David, Troy, Sam, and Crispin could sound exactly like Tim Daly, and Roger, Mark, and Keith could sound exactly like George Newbern.
Crispin and Keith could even become main voices for Superman, and fill in for Tim and George when they're unavailable.
Following the launch of Superman, DC Universe steward James Gunn is now writing and preparing to direct the next movie in the ‘Super-Family,’ Warner Bros. has announced.
Confirmation comes from CEO David Zaslav in a financial call in which he said Superman marked “the beginning of a new era for DC Studios.”
"We're thrilled to share that James Gunn is already writing and preparing to direct the next installment within the 'Super-Family,'" Zaslav said.
But what is this mystery Superman follow-up? Gunn has spoken in the past about his next writer / director project for DC Studios, which sounds like it's sort of a Superman sequel, but isn't really.
What The Surprise Character Who Called Superman A B!tch Means To The Future of James Gunn's DCU
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn confirmed he has already begun working on Superman's next DCU appearance, although he wouldn't go so far as to call it a sequel. "What I'm working on is in some way… I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes," was his response to Superman getting a follow-up movie. "But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily."
Here's what we know so far: in film, DC Studios has Supergirl and Clayface coming out in 2026, and the next Wonder Woman, which doesn't have a release window. The Batman II, from Matt Reeves’ self-contained the ‘Batman Epic Crime Saga.’ will begin shooting next spring, with a release date set for 2027. Gunn has also talked about a Sgt. Rock adaptation, and a Justice League teamup starring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. In February, Gunn and co-DC Studios CEO Peter Safran confirmed The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new Batman into the DCU, ruling out current Batman actor Robert Pattinson in the process.
In TV, the Batman Epic Crime Saga looks set for The Penguin Season 2, with DCU entry Peacemaker Season 2 out soon and a Lanterns series due in 2026. Gunn is reportedly considering TV spinoffs for characters such as Mister Terrific and Jimmy Olsen following their well-received supporting roles in Superman.
"In a precise and measured way, the DC franchise will increasingly overlay across the studio’s broader efforts: from film and TV to consumer products, games, experiences and social," Warner Bros. said.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane … it’s Warner Bros. studio’s rising fortunes.
After spending much of 2024 in the box-office doldrums, the legendary studio has scored a remarkable turnaround with five straight No. 1 hits, culminating with this weekend’s smash, “Superman,” which drew in $217 million worldwide.
The change in fortunes for the studio division of Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.
kicked off in April with the release of “A Minecraft Movie,” which has grossed $955 million globally.
That was followed by “Sinners,” the Ryan Coogler-directed vampire thriller starring Michael B. Jordan, which has brought in $366 million. “Final Destination: Bloodlines” came next, grossing $285 million worldwide, followed by “F1: The Movie,” starring Brad Pitt, which has taken in $393 million globally so far.
In all, Warner Bros.’ box-office receipts have been higher so far this year than for all of 2024, putting 2025 on target to be the studio’s best year since at least 2019, according to box-office database the Numbers.
Last year, the Warner Bros. studio division contributed 29% to Warner Bros. Discovery’s total annual revenue and 18% of its total adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. That came in a year that saw the company record a 5% decline in revenue and an 11% slide in Ebitda compared with 2023.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s stock price has shot up 25% since the company announced plans in early June to spin off several of its television channels into a separate company.
On Monday, the company’s stock surged 2.4% to a seven-month high, although it remains at around half the price from when WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc. merged in 2022.
“Superman” is part of the studio’s revamp of its DC Studios brand. For years, Warner Bros. Discovery has struggled to find consistent success with films derived from the intellectual property of the DC Extended Universe and has lagged a distant second behind Walt Disney Co.’s
megafranchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Superman” cost $225 million to make, suggesting it is well on its way to making a big profit.
While Warner Bros. has achieved major hits with some DC films — most notably several Batman movies — it has also seen many considerable flops, like “Joker: Folie à Deux” and “Blue Beetle.”
Earlier attempts to revive the “Superman” franchise, after a strong run in the 1970s and 1980s with films starring Christopher Reeve, had met with mixed success.
So Warner Bros. Discovery Chief Executive David Zaslav focused considerable energy toward rethinking the DC franchise and how to turn it into a consistent hit machine.
First he brought in director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran as co-chairs of DC Studios to help bring greater focus to the company’s output. As the first film under the new management regime, “Superman” — which was also written and directed by Gunn — suggests that the new model may work.
“A successful Superman opening and likely solid run box office run confirms the evergreen character of DC Studios’ [intellectual property] — especially in a likely glutted superhero market,” Matthew Harrigan of Benchmark Equity Research wrote in a note to clients.
“More important than immediate economics for the $225M production cost movie starring David Corenswet, the favorable reception supports the outlook for a high profile queue from DC Studios including 2026’s ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Clayface,’ more Batman releases, a new ‘Wonder Woman’ in development and a Green Lantern TV show (Lanterns) for HBO Max,” he added.
Warner Bros. shares have climbed 13.6% in 2025, while Disney’s stock has gained 7.7% and the S&P 500 index
has advanced 6.6%.
