Nicolas Cage is reportedly nearing a deal to lead the Season 5 of True Detective. While most details regarding the new season are under wraps, but per Variety, Season 5 of the HBO show will be set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City. Cage would be the latest high-profile actor to take on the lead role in True Detective, following the likes of Jodie Foster, Mahershala Ali, Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, and Matthew McConaughey. Foster, Ali and McConaughey all earned Emmy nominations for their roles, with Foster taking home both the Emmy and the Golden Globe for her performance in Season 4. If Cage does indeed snag the role, it will only be his second lead role on television; last year, it was revealed that the actor is slated to play Spider-Man Noir in a live-action series for MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video. There is no release date for the show, entitled Noir, but it’s scheduled to arrive sometime in 2026. Related Video
Earlier this year, Cage revealed that rarely does a day go by “where I’m not mistaken for Nick Cave,” he joked during an interview. Soon thereafter, Cave shared a humorous anecdote about a time when he was mistaken for Cage by a drunken fan of the actor while he was living in São Paulo.
“Anyway, these confusions between me and Mr. Cage happen fairly often,” Cave added. “But I don’t mind. I’m a fan. Have you guys seen Mandy? My God. What a film.”

While politics weren't overtly present during the show, there was an undercurrent of major changes happening in Hollywood.
By Daniel Arkin and Rebecca Keegan
LOS ANGELES — Amid the pop of Champagne bottles and the sound of applause, so much of what mattered at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night was what wasn’t said.
The company that had the biggest night — Warner Bros. Discovery, which won top awards for “One Battle After Another,” “Sinners,” “The Pitt” and “Hacks” — is at the heart of a fight over the future of Hollywood.
Inside the ballroom at the Beverly Hilton were the three men waging that fight: Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who is overseeing the sale of his company, and Netflix and Paramount CEOs Ted Sarandos and David Ellison, who are battling to buy it. Not one of them was mentioned in a speech or a presenter’s comments.

Instead, there were opportunities to read between the lines, as when multiple winners, including Stellan Skarsgård (“Sentimental Value”) and Ryan Coogler (“Sinners”), extolled the importance of the cinematic experience, which can be viewed as a vote against Netflix’s ownership. Or when host Nikki Glaser called Paramount-owned CBS News “CBS News: America’s newest place to see BS news,” drawing a big laugh from the room, in a rebuke of the new leadership Ellison has installed there.
Here’s a look at all the key takeaways and top moments from this year’s show, which marked the official start to the 2026 awards season.
Politics (mostly) out of the limelight
Hollywood awards shows sometimes get topical. But Sunday’s Globes were more muted on that front. It was a notable shift partly because some of the year’s major contenders have political themes. “One Battle After Another” concerns left-wing revolutionaries. “It Was Just an Accident,” from exiled Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi, and “The Secret Agent,” from Brazil, depict characters struggling under repressive regimes.

But there were still some quietly political remarks. “The Secret Agent” director Kleber Mendonça Filho alluded to what he described as “a very important moment in time to be making films — here in the U.S. [and] in Brazil.” Wagner Moura, the movie’s star, dedicated his best drama film actor prize to people “sticking to their values in difficult moments.”
‘One Battle After Another’ and Chalamet gain Oscars momentum
Paul Thomas Anderson’s film appears to be on a glide path to best picture at the Oscars in March. The Warner Bros. Pictures film, a thriller about a band of political revolutionaries on the run from an old foe, went into Sunday with a leading nine Globe nominations and won four trophies: best musical/comedy, best director (Anderson), best screenplay (Anderson) and best supporting actress (Teyana Taylor).
Timothée Chalamet, winner of the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Award for "Marty Supreme" poses in the press room during the 83rd Annual Golden Globe Awards at The Beverly Hilton on January 11, 2026 in Beverly Hills, Calif.Amy Sussman / Getty Images
The Globes don’t always predict success at the Oscars, but “One Battle” has other feathers in its cap, including best picture wins at the recent Critics Choice Awards, the National Society of Film Critics Awards and the Gotham Awards. Anderson is also revered by cinephiles worldwide, owing in part to seminal masterworks like “Boogie Nights” and “There Will Be Blood.”
In the acting categories, Timothée Chalamet scored his first Golden Globe for his lead role as a fiercely ambitious table tennis player in “Marty Supreme.” Chalamet edged out competition that included George Clooney (“Jay Kelly”) and Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle”) — and set himself up nicely for another victory at the Academy Awards.
If he ends up triumphing at the Oscars, Chalamet, 30, could snap Oscar voters’ habit of honoring industry veterans.
‘The Pitt’ continues to conquer TV drama
In an era of pricey, high-concept drama series like “Severance” and “The Last of Us,” it wasn’t a given that the modestly budgeted medical procedural “The Pitt” would break through. But the acclaimed portrait of emergency room professionals trying to get through the day has become a hit, a critical darling and — judging by Sunday’s results — an awards season favorite.

Globes voters handed “The Pitt” two marquee awards: best drama series and best drama series actor, for Noah Wyle. “The Pitt” and Wyle received equivalent honors at the Primetime Emmy Awards in September, putting the HBO hospital procedural in the same company as modern classics like “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “Succession.”
R. Scott Gemmill, the show’s creator, accepted the award for best drama series and paid tribute to “the first responders and health care workers, who are the real heroes, who inspire us.”
Nikki Glaser, biting as ever
Glaser, in her second stint as Globes emcee, delighted the crowd at the Beverly Hilton with barbed one-liners about the Warner Bros. sale, the Jeffrey Epstein files, the upheaval at CBS News, Leonardo DiCaprio’s dating life, Sean Penn’s political activism, Kevin Hart’s stature — and, in good self-deprecating fashion, herself.
In the final seconds of her opening monologue, she struck a more earnest tone.
“I’m making jokes up here, but it is an absolute privilege to be in this room with you all. Yes, I’m your host, but I’m honestly such a massive fan,” Glaser told the crowd. “Your work this year was innovative; it felt fearless, inspiring and, in some cases, downright Zootopian.”
Podcasting gets the Globes treatment
In a first, the Globes recognized achievement in podcasting — and handed the prize to “Good Hang with Amy Poehler,” a light-hearted interview series hosted by the former “Saturday Night Live” and “Parks and Recreation” star.
“I don’t know about award shows, but when they get it right, it makes sense,” Poehler joked. “This is an attempt to try to make a very rough and unkind world filled with a little more love and laughter.”
The award was presented by hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg. “Before podcasts, I was what you all listened to driving around in your cars,” he joked.
Daniel Arkin reported from New York and Rebecca Keegan from Los Angeles.

CBS cited cost concerns in July when it announced the show would end.
Paramount’s bid to buy Warner Bros. has one of its stars curious about the economics of the possible deal.
On Monday, Paramount, led by CEO David Ellison, launched a hostile bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery after the latter agreed to a deal with Netflix last week that would sell the Warner Bros. film and TV studios, HBO and HBO Max. The Netflix deal is valued at $82.7 billion, or $27.75 per share of WBD common stock. Paramount’s tender offer is $30 per share, putting the total at more than $108 billion.
The eye-popping numbers led Late Show host Stephen Colbert to muse about the Paramount bid during his monologue Tuesday night. (Paramount owns CBS, which airs The Late Show.)
“Wow. I gotta say, if my company’s got that kind of green, I’m sure they can afford to un-cancel one of their best shows,” Colbert said, drawing cheers from the studio audience. “CBS, you heard the people — bring back The Equalizer.”
CBS, of course, announced in July — a few weeks before Ellison’s Skydance finalized its purchase of Paramount — that it would end The Late Show after its current season. The network cited cost concerns as the primary reason for the cancellation, claiming the show loses $40 million annually.
Colbert also noted that the Paramount bid for WBD includes $24 billion from wealth funds controlled by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. “And when the dictator of Saudia Arabia gives you billions of dollars, I’m sure there’s no catch,” he said. “In a totally unrelated story, I’m looking forward to next season’s new CBS hit comedy, Young Mohammed bin Sheldon.”
Colbert’s monologue from Tuesday’s show is below. The comments about the Paramount-WBD offer start at the 8:34 mark.

Gisèle Pelicot, the French woman who survived a decade of abuse after her husband drugged her and arranged for dozens of men to rape her while she was unconscious, is to be the subject of an HBO documentary.
The Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network is in production on the doc, which will be directed by Joanna Natasegara, the Oscar-winning producer behind The White Helmets.
The untitled doc will tell the story of Pelicot, who waived her anonymity and spoke publicly about the case, which saw 51 men convicted in what became one of France’s largest sexual violence trials.
It will accompany Gisèle on her journey as she rebuilds her life, remaining determined to speak out for survivors of sexual violence everywhere.
Abigail Anketell-Jones (The Disciple) and Brenda Coughlin (Citizenfour) will produce alongside Natasegara with Laura Poitras (Cover Up) exec producing. Other exec producers include Mariana Oliva, Marcos Nisti, Luana Lobo, Estela Renner, and Ana Lucia Villela for MFF & Co., James Costa and Trevor Burgess for Bird Street Productions, Chandra Jessee and Rebecca Lichtenfeld for InMaat, Maxyne Franklin and Sandra Whipham for Doc Society and Jenny Warburg.
Natasegara said, “Gisèle’s decision to stand up and speak for survivors of sexual violence everywhere is simply an awe-inspiring act of courage. The film is a testimony to her insistence on dignity, her resolute refusal to be defined by the crimes committed against her, and how France and the rest of the world choose to respond to her bravery. From the day I learned about her story, I felt a responsibility to help to tell it.”

Best Superhero Movies on HBO Max (January 2026)
JANUARY 23, 2026
HBO Max hosts some of the greatest superhero movies of all time. This is thanks, in part, to Warner Bros. stewardship of DC Comics since 1972. With a rare few exceptions, virtually every DC film adaptation over the past five decades was produced by a WB subsidiary.
What are the best Superhero movies on HBO Max as of January 2026?
Most of the superhero movies available on HBO Max are set in the DC Comics multiverse. Despite this, the diversity of the publisher’s creations has resulted in a variety of films over the past five decades. The list which follows lists the five best films, in order of release.
Superman: The Movie (1978)
Superman: The Movie was a revelation on many levels. The tagline of the film’s first trailer promised “You’ll Believe A Man Can Fly.” The film delivered on that promise, thanks to practical special effects that were revolutionary for their time. However, that is only a part of why Superman: The Movie is still regarded as one of the best superhero movies ever.
At its core, Superman: The Movie treated its source material with reverence. This was surprising to many given comic books were seen as children’s entertainment at the time. However, Warner Bros. was determined to fashion a film that took the Man of Steel seriously, while offering a fun family film.
Batman (1989)
For many years, the name of Batman was synonymous with the campy 60’s sitcom starring Adam West. That remained the case, even as the superhero comics became more mature during the Bronze Age and Dark Age of Comics. The 1989 Batman film restored the original vision of the Dark Knight Detective, with an extra emphasis on “dark.”
The film largely centers around photojournalist Vicki Vale, as she searches for proof of the vigilante said to protect Gotham City. Her investigation leads her into the clutches of gangster Jack Napier, who has developed a new attitude as a “fully functioning homicidal artist.” This sets up a battle for the soul of Gotham City, as Napier, now known as The Joker, takes out his rivals while daring Batman to come for him.
The screenplay by Sam Hamm and Warren Skaaren takes some liberties with the classic comics’ mythology, particularly with the twist ending. 1989’s Batman has also been criticized for being more focused on The Joker and Vicki Vale than on the title character. Despite this, the film broke box office records and was a critical and commercial success. However, it is better remembered today for how it influenced the popular image of both Batman and Gotham City.
Tim Burton’s production team managed a miracle with their art design. The film’s version of Gotham City is a gestalt of grotesque architecture and 40s’ fashions. It somehow blends the aesthetics of classic Noir with the dystopian decay of modern Manhattan. This unique style would make its way into Batman: The Animated Series and influence many comic creators.
The Dark Knight (2008)
The second film in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, The Dark Knight is widely considered to be the best of the three. There are several reasons for this. Chief among them is the Oscar-winning performance of Heath Ledger as The Joker. His performance stands out, even among an ensemble of great actors who are all delivering their A-game.
Thematically, the film is Nolan’s strongest, dealing with idea of duality. This is a common theme in superhero movies and most obviously reflected in Harvey Dent’s transformation into the monstrous Two-Face. However, every major character in the cast has a conflict regarding two roles they play.
Bruce Wayne desires a normal life with Rachel Dawes, but fears he must be Batman to protect Gotham City. Alfred is torn between his roles as Bruce’s employee and his foster father, and deciding what is best for him. Even The Joker is torn between the showman he presents himself as and the monster who wants to be reassured everyone is as twisted as he is.
The Batman (2022)
When 2022’s The Batman was announced, many wondered what it had to offer. The savior of Gotham City had been adapted and readapted several times before in feature films at that point. However, the most recent superhero movie to feature the Dark Knight did have one new thing to offer; a detective story.
Strangely enough, most of the Batman movies do not show him doing much detective work. The few that do (like Batman Forever) are decidedly silly and what mysteries exist are limited to The Riddler’s riddles. This is odd considering the character is known as “the World’s Greatest Detective” in the comics.
The Batman, however, borrows heavily from several modern Batman detective stories, particularly The Long Halloween and Year Zero. It also builds its story around the mystery of The Riddler’s identity. Over the course of the film the inexperienced Dark Knight realizes he must be more than a deterrent or a warrior to be an effective crime fighter.
It is not enough for a superhero to punish the wicked. They must also inspire others to virtue. This is reflected in the film’s closing monologue, which reveals the hidden heart of Batman’s character. “People need hope,” Batman says. “To know someone’s out there for them.”
Superman (2025)
Not quite six months have passed since 2025’s Superman first premiered in theaters. However, it quickly made an impression. Beyond offering the first cinematic look at the new DCU, it also neatly modernized the Man of Steel for the 21st century.
The movie’s story is as much an examination of modern media as it is the role of heroes in society. In many ways, the film’s great villain is not Lex Luthor, but the sociopolitical structure that Luthor manipulates. It is telling that the writers of The Daily Planet writing an honest, well-researched story is as pivotal to the heroes’ victory as anything The Justice Gang does.
Yes, The Engineer and Ultraman may threaten Superman physically. Yet it is the public turning on Superman because of sensationalist reporting and Lois Lane asking hard questions about his actions that truly hurts him. This shows a depth far greater than most modern Superman stories and set a high standard for the DCU to follow.
How we picked the best Superhero Movies on HBO Max in January 2026
The biggest question in composing this list was whether to include animated superhero movies or not. While often overlooked and rarely released in theaters, many of DC’s animated offerings match the live-action blockbusters in quality. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, for instance, is considered the best Batman movie ever by many fans of the Dark Knight.
Once it was decided to make animated movies their own category, three more criteria were considered. First, how well the movie set a standard for other superhero movies to follow. Secondly, how well the movie adapted the source material for feature films while remaining true to the classic comics. Finally, whether the movie had established a legacy that was later emulated in comic books and other adaptations.

“The Gilded Age” has been renewed for Season 4 at HBO, Variety has learned.
The renewal news comes as the period drama has aired six of the eight episodes in its third season. The Season 3 finale is scheduled to air Aug. 10.
“We couldn’t be prouder of the undeniable viewership heights ‘The Gilded Age’ as achieved this season,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming and head of HBO Drama Series and Films. “Transporting us to 1880s New York City, Julian Fellowes and the enormously talented cast and crew have created a ‘cant-miss it’ entertainment experience from week to week, and we’re delighted to continue exploring these characters’ grand ambitions for what we promise will be a thrilling fourth season.”
Per HBO, premiere-night viewing for third season has grown for five consecutive weeks. The series is up 20% percent in viewership compared to last season, and has hit series highs for two consecutive weeks.
“Thanks to Julian and the phenomenally talented cast and crew, each season of ‘The Gilded Age’ delivers stories rich in drama and history, stellar performances and stunning production value,” said Erin Underhill, president of series co-producer Universal Television. “Every moment spent in this world and with these characters only deepens our love for the show, and we’re so happy that our partners at HBO and audiences around the world are clamoring for more.”
The expansive ensemble cast of the series includes: Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga, Harry Richardson, Blake Ritson, Ben Ahlers, Ashlie Atkinson, Dylan Baker, Kate Baldwin, Victoria Clark, John Ellison Conlee, Michael Cumpsty, Kelley Curran, Jordan Donica, Jessica Frances Dukes, Claybourne Elder, Amy Forsyth, Jack Gilpin, LisaGay Hamilton, Ward Horton, Simon Jones, Sullivan Jones, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Ben Lamb, Nathan Lane, Andrea Martin, Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Debra Monk, Hattie Morahan, Donna Murphy, Kristine Nielsen, Paul Alexander Nolan, Kelli O’Hara, Patrick Page, Rachel Pickup, Taylor Richardson, Douglas Sills, Bobby Steggert, Erin Wilhelmi, John Douglas Thompson, Leslie Uggams, Merritt Wever, with Bill Camp and Phylicia Rashad.
Julian Fellowes created the series and serves as executive produer. Gareth Neame also executive produces along with David Crockett and Bob Greenblatt. Michael Engler is a director and executive producer on the series, as is Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Sonja Warfield is a writer and executive producer, with Erica Armstrong Dunbar co-executive producing. The series is a co-production between HBO and Universal Television.

The deal was nixed last year because there was no clear path for Fox News and CNN to coexist.
It’s the era of mergers and acquisitions for legacy media companies, and two of the most prominent reportedly discussed a tie-up last summer, though nothing materialized.
According to a report by Daniel Thomas in Financial Times, John Malone, the media maven behind the Warner Bros. Discovery, and Rupert Murdoch, patriarch of the Fox Corporation empire, held “serious discussions about merging Fox into Time Warner, into Discovery” during last year’s Sun Valley conference. However, the deal was nixed because there was no clear path for Fox News and CNN to coexist. “The deal ‘probably would have happened if we thought that Fox News and CNN could live under one umbrella,'” Malone said, per Thomas.
On paper, the merger would have made a lot of sense. Fox has much of what Warner Bros. Discovery lacks, and vice versa. The hypothetical joint entity would’ve had a broadcast network, courtesy of Fox, along with NFL and major college football rights, also courtesy of Fox. Warner Bros. Discovery would’ve been able to provide a major streaming platform, HBO Max, along with its large portfolio of sports rights and miscellaneous cable channels. There’s a real argument to be made that a merger would’ve made both companies stronger.
Then, of course, there’s the simmering Murdoch succession drama happening behind the scenes. Last year, Murdoch failed to restructure the family trust in a way that would’ve given his preferred successor, son Lachlan, full control of Fox Corporation. Instead, upon the elder Murdoch’s death, control of his media assets will be split equally among four of his children, some of which could look to reshape the right-wing slant of Fox News in a manner that Murdoch would find untenable.
Rather than leaving his legacy up to chance, some media observers posited that Murdoch would look to sell off the remaining portions of his empire (he already sold most to Disney in a $71.3 billion deal in 2019) prior to his death.
So far, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Fox has gone forward with its own streaming plans, launching Fox One last month. The company also continues to be acquisitive in new media ventures, rather than looking to sell or spin its current assets.
Warner Bros. Discovery has also moved forward with a plan of its own. The company is set to spinoff its legacy cable assets, including TNT Sports, into an entity called Discovery Global, while the film studio and HBO Max will remain under the Warner Bros. umbrella.
However, one nugget in the Financial Times report might still be relevant to sports fans. Malone is currently going forward with a split of one of his other media companies, Liberty Media, which owns Formula 1. Per the report, the split will “make it easier for Malone to pursue a deal involving Formula 1, for which Liberty has already received approaches.” If that remains a goal for Malone, Formula 1 could find itself under new ownership in the coming years.
